This last week has been very interesting. Two different researchers reached out to me to share information on Hebrew NT origins. One of these individuals mailed me a thumb drive with about 30 recently uncovered Hebrew NT manuscripts, many of which I had never seen before.
I opened the first document on the thumb drive, a Hebrew manuscript of Matthew, and immediately recognized the text as very similar, but not identical, to one I have had for years. I have spent the weekend doing some initial comparisons of this manuscript with other Hebrew manuscripts of Matthew in my library, with some truly interesting results. I am going to have to do a full, line by line comparison of this Hebrew text of Matthew with other Hebrew and Aramaic texts in my library, in order to clarify some of the results. I really cannot say too much right now, other than to say that there are two possible relationships this text has to some others, and either one will result in an important discovery concerning Hebrew Matthew. One way or another, I will have an important new discovery to announce when this analysis is complete! Unfortunately this type of analysis takes hours and days. I have a big table with facsimiles of multiple Hebrew and Aramaic manuscripts laid out, as I compare the new manuscript to all of the others. It is very much “disappearing into the zone” kind of work. Fortunately I have a talent for this kind of thing, comparing data and seeing correlations and relationships. It is kind of like I go into another world, and it is just me and the manuscripts.
The exciting thing is that this is only one of about thirty manuscript facsimiles on this thumb drive!
