Sukkot – Home Is Where the Heart Is

Sukkot – Home Is Where the Heart Is
By
Rabbi Robert. O. Miller

“On the first day (of Sukkot – Feat of Tabernacles) you are to take choice fruit from the trees, and palm fronds, leafy branches and poplars, and rejoice before Yahweh your Elohim for seven days. Celebrate this as a festival to Yahweh for seven days each year. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come; celebrate it in the seventh month. (Leviticus 23:40, 41)”

A major component to celebrating Sukkot – the Feast of Tabernacles – is to erect a Tabernacle or tent.

“Celebrate this as a festival to Yahweh for seven days each year. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come; celebrate it in the seventh month. Live in סֻכָּה sük·kä’ (meaning temporary shelter or tent), for seven days: All native-born Israelites are to live in booths so your descendants will know that I had the Israelites live in booths when I brought them out of Egypt. I am Yahweh your Elohim.’  (Leviticus 23:41-43)”

Why does Yahweh want us to live in tents? We are a modern society, is there really any need for us to know how to rough it in tents?

Here’s a story.  Once there was a Rabbi (Rabbi Dov Ber, the celebrated  Maggid of Mezritch), who lived on the outskirts of town in a sparsely furnished shack.  Once a rich man came to visit.  He was shocked at the living conditions of this celebrated Rabbi.

The rich man offered to build the Rabbi a house more befitting the Rabbi’s important stature.

In reply, the Rabbi asked the rich man to describe his own home.

The rich man expectedly described a beautiful mansion.

The Rabbi then asked him what kind of accommodations he lived in while traveling?

The rich man showed him the interior of his coach.

The Rabbi said, “I see that your accommodations are much more modest than the place you call home.  It is the same with me.  One day you will come to visit me in my true home and you will be astonished how different it will be.”

The sükkä’ or tent reminds us we’re just travelers in the present material world.

This World Is Not My Home

This world is not my home I’m just passing through
my treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue
the angels beckon me from Heaven’s open door
and I can’t feel at home in this world anymore.

They’re all expecting me and that’s one thing I know
my savior pardoned me and now I onward go
I know He’ll take me through though I am weak and poor
and I can’t feel at home in this world anymore.

Just up in Glory Land we’ll live eternally
the Saints on every hand are shouting victory
their song of sweetest praise drifts back from Heaven’s shore
and I can’t feel at home in this world anymore.

O Lord you know I have no friend like you
if Heaven’s not my home then Lord what will I do?
the angels beckon me from Heaven’s open door
and I can’t feel at home in this world anymore.

We have to remind ourselves, as nice as our homes are, they are not our true homes.

“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.

By faith we understand that the universe was formed at Yahweh’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. By faith Abel offered Yahweh a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was commended as a righteous man, when Yahweh spoke well of his offerings. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead.

By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death; he could not be found, because Yahweh had taken him away. For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased Yahweh. And without faith it is impossible to please Yahweh, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is Yahweh.

By faith Abraham, even though he was past age—and Sarah herself was barren—was enabled to become a father because heconsidered him faithful who had made the promise. And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.

All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore Yahweh is not ashamed to be called their Elohim, for he has prepared a city for them.” (Hebrews 11:1-16)

This world was not their home. All of these Ancient Worthies were strangers in this world, aliens in this land. And their behavior was dictated by the fact that this world had no hold on them. Their treasure was banked someplace else because their eyes were fixed on a heavenly destination.

Like the preacher that traveled across the country preaching. At one destination, his baggage didn’t make it. He needed a couple of suits so he went down to the local thrift shop.

He told the clerk, “I’d like to get a couple of suits,” the man smiled, led him to a whole rack of them and said, “Good, we’ve got several. But you need to know that they came from the local mortuary. They’ve all been cleaned and pressed, but they were used on corpses. Not a thing wrong with ’em. I just didn’t want that to bother you.”

The Preacher said, “No, that’s fine.” He tried a few of the suits on and finally bought two of them for about $25 dollars each.

When he got back to this his room, he began to get dressed for the service. As he put one suit on, he tried to put his hands in the pockets, but couldn’t. The suits looked as if they had pockets, but they were just flaps sewn on the coat. He thought about that for a second. “Of course! Dead people don’t carry stuff with ’em when they die.” They are no longer attached to this world.

“… they were longing for a better country— a heavenly one.” (Hebrews 11:16)

This is what King Messiah YahShua was teaching in His “Sermon On the Mount”:

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21)

Thiskind of mindset that impresses Yahweh. “… Yahweh is not ashamed to be called their Elohim, for he has prepared a city for them.” (Hebrews 11:16)

Let’s take a look at what these 4 Believers of Hebrews 11:1-16did to please Yahweh:

  1. Abel:  Scripture tells us that Yahweh asked for a sacrifice, and Genesis tell us:  “Cain (Abel’s brother) brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to Yahweh.” (Genesis 4:3)
But by contrast, Abel “brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof.” (Genesis 4:4)
Yahweh rejected Cain’s offering, but He accepted Abel’s. “By faith Abel offered Yahweh a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was commended as a righteous man, when Yahweh spoke well of his offerings. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead.” (Hebrews 11:4) Abel invested in Yahweh when he offered up his sacrifice. His sacrifice was offered in faith because Abel believed that “Yahweh existed and that He was the rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:6) In contrast, Cain was just going thru the motions of ritual. He had seen his parents doing this. He was told how Yahweh sacrificed to make coverings for his parents. He thought, “I’m a farmer, I’ll offer up my produce,” without checking to see if Yahweh would accept a change in the procedure. He wasn’t investing in Yahweh. Cain didn’t even bother to ASK Yahweh why He didn’t like the offering because he didn’t care. Cain wasn’t interested in investing in Yahweh … he was focused on himself. This is what is wrong with a lot of relationships.
  2. Enoch: “Enoch walked with Elohim; then he was no more, because Elohim took him away.” (Genesis 5:24) Enoch invested his life in Yahweh – He WALKED with Yahweh. Yahweh didn’t take anybody else away with Him because nobody else apparently wanted to spend that kind of time with Yahweh … but Enoch did. Enoch invested his life in Yahweh because he “believed Yahweh existed and that He was the rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”
  3. Noah: Noah invested – not only his life but – his social status in Yahweh. He built an Ark when no one even knew what a boat was. It had not rained, so there was no need to prepare for a flood. Life experience had taught mankind there was no such thing as a flood. But Noah believed Yahweh.  Noah spent a major portion of his life working on a project he knew would please Yahweh even if his fellow humans thought he was insane. He invested his time, his resources and his whole family in making it a success. Yahweh didn’t select anybody else to work on this project because nobody else wanted to invest that kind of time in the things of Yahweh. Nobody else believed Yahweh’s message.  But Noah was willing to do the job because he “believed Yahweh existed and that He was the rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”
  4. Abraham: He gave up everything to follow Yahweh. He left his home and his family. He walked away from everything that he’d once held dear so that he could obey the call of Yahweh. He literally became an alien and a stranger… a nomad wandering about the countryside. All because “…when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.” (Hebrews 11:10) Abraham believed in Yahweh … and he obeyed Yahweh because he “believed Yahweh existed and that He was the rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

Temporary Dwelling

This world was not our home, we are just passing through. These “Men of Faith” in Hebrews 11:1-16were all held up as being people of great faith because this world was not their home. They were in the habit of investing their lives, their jobs, and their families in a Yahweh who they knew existed and Who is the rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. In order to become like them we’ve got to learn to think like those who don’t belong to this world.

That’s what King Messiah YahShua was trying to get through to the rich young ruler:

“A certain ruler asked him, ‘Good Rabbi, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’

‘Why do you call me good?’ YahShua answered. ‘No one is good—except Yahweh alone. You know the commandments: “Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.” (Exodus 20:12-16; Deuteronomy 5:16-20)

‘All these I have kept since I was a boy,’ he said.

When YahShua heard this, he said to him, ‘You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’

When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was a man of great wealth.” (Luke 18:18-23)

This is not to say that every person coming into faith must sell everything they have. YahShua was honing in on this man’s problem – materialism. He wanted this man to reinvest – to invest in Yahweh. But the man just couldn’t. The young man’s wealth SHACKLED him to this present world. This world WAS his home!

This story reminds me of another story: There was this congregation that had struck oil on its property. Instantly they called a congregational meeting and adopted 3 resolutions.
#1. They decided they would pump as much oil as they possibly could.
#2. They would distribute the oil money equally among the members.
#3. They would not accept any new members.

Now correct me if I’m wrong but does it seem to you that that congregation was a little out of whack? If you’re like me you’re thinking to yourself – “what’s wrong with those people?” Have they forgotten their mission? Of course they had! They forgot that this world was not their home.

The problem for them was that they allowed the potential wealth of the oil field shackle them to this world. The lure of ready money made them desire to be citizens of THIS world.

“…remember you  WERE formerly Gentiles by birth and called ‘uncircumcised’ by those who call themselves ‘the circumcision’ (that done in the body by the hands of men)— remember that at that time you were separate from Messiah, excluded from citizenship in the Commonwealth of Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without Yahweh in the world. But now in Messiah YahShua you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Messiah.” (Ephesians 2:11-13)

“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both Yahweh and ‘Mammon’.” (Matthew 6:24) Mammon was the Syrian false god of riches, he was materialism personified.

Possessions and money have the most potential to chain us to this world – to rob us of our ability to be aliens and strangers in this world. And because of its power money can easily make the Believer lose sight of his mission to “sift Israel from the nations” (Amos 9:9) and become like that congregation that sold the oil and kept all the money for themselves. Money made them forget why they existed and made them become self-absorbed. That congregation no longer invested in Yahweh, instead invested in only itself. Its members focused only on their own needs… in their own wants. Not on Yahweh’s Kingdom.

Why do you think the sacred Scriptures teach us the importance of our tithes and offerings? Does Yahweh really need our tithes and offerings? He who owns cattle on a 1000 hills (and the potatoes under the hills), does He really NEED whatever I might give this week? No, of course not! But I need to give it.

My weekly offering gives me a way to invest in Yahweh. It gives me an opportunity to say that “I believe Yahweh exists and that He was the rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

And my offering on Sabbath gives me a tool to remove the power money has on me. The only way money can chain me to this world is I become convinced that I can’t do without that portion of my paycheck that is my tithes and offerings.

“…at the …Feast of Tabernacles. No man should appear before Yahweh empty-handed: Each of you must bring a gift in proportion to the way Yahweh your Elohim has blessed you.” (Deuteronomy 16:16, 17)

Let’s face it, the only reason I wouldn’t give an offering “in proportion to the way Yahweh your Elohim has blessed” is because I have more faith in the power of money to give me security than I do in the power of Yahweh to continue to bless me year after year. By holding on to that offering chains me to this world, while giving it chains me – by faith – to Yahweh.

A Great Cloud of Witnesses

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on YahShua, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the gallows, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the Throne of Yahweh. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” (Hebrews 12:1-4)

Who is this “great cloud of witnesses” the writer of the Book of Hebrews speaking of? In context he is speaking of the children of Abraham. They are children of faith, who have followed the example of Abraham. “By faith [Abraham], sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is Yahweh.” (Hebrews 11:9-10)

Jacob, Abraham’s grandson, described life as a “pilgrimage.” Jacob said to Pharaoh, ‘The years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty. My years have been few and difficult, and they do not equal the years of the pilgrimage of my fathers.’” (Genesis 47:9)

The Hebrew word מָגוּר  “mä·gür’” translated as “pilgrimage” means “sojourning or temporary dwelling place, pilgrimage, to be an alien or stranger.”

It’s a choice. Yahweh gave Adam the opportunity to choose life or death.

“…but concerning the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the orchard Elohim said, ‘You must not eat from it, and you must not touch it, or else you will die…” (Genesis 3:6-7)

Adam chose death.

“[Chavah] (Eve) also gave some of it to her husband (Adam) who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them opened, and they knew they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.” (Genesis 3:6-7)

Yahweh set Life and Death before Israel:

“This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live  and that you may love Yahweh your Elohim, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For Yahweh is your life, and He will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” (Deuteronomy 30:19, 20)

Joshua asked Israel to make a choice for life or death.

“…choose today whom you will worship, whether it be the gods whom your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. But I and my family will worship Yahweh!” (Joshua 24:15)

The People of Israel made a Choice:

“The people of Israel responded, ‘Far be it from us to abandon Yahweh so we can worship other gods!’ (Joshua 24:16)

Yahweh sent Israel His only begotten Son as the ultimate “Sin Offering” to re-establish Covenant with Them:

“…when the time had fully come, Yahweh sent his Son, born of a woman, born into the authority of the Torah, to redeem those living by authority of the Torah, that we might receive the full rights of sons. Because you are sons, Yahweh sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba!’ So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, Yahweh has made you also an heir.” (Galatians 4:4-7)

However, as Isaiah said: He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.” (Isaiah 53:3)

Listen to the cry of our Savior:

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! Look, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of Yahweh!’ (Psalm 118:26)” (Luke 13:34-35)

“When all these blessings and curses I have set before you come upon you and you take them to heart wherever Yahweh your Elohim disperses you among the nations, and when you and your children return to Yahweh your Elohim and obey Him with all your heart and with all your soul according to everything I command you today, then Yahweh your Elohim will restore your inheritance and have compassion on you and gather you again from all the nations where he scattered you. Even if you have been banished to the most distant land under the heavens, from there Yahweh your Elohim will gather you and bring you back. He will bring you to the land that belonged to your fathers, and you will take possession of it. He will make you more prosperous and numerous than your fathers.” (Deuteronomy 30:1-5)

Hear the charge of Rabbi Sha’ul:

“In the presence of Yahweh and of Messiah YahShua, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. 7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which Yahweh, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” (2 Timothy 4:1-8)

We cannot lose sight of our mission. This world is only a temporary dwelling. We are looking for a city whose builder and maker is Yahweh:

“I saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, coming down out of Heaven from Yahweh, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband… One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, ‘Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.’ And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from Yahweh. It shone with the glory of Yahweh, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west. The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city, its gates and its walls. The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadiain length, and as wide and high as it is long. He measured its wall and it was 144 cubitsthick,by man’s measurement, which the angel was using. The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass. The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent glass.

starI did not see a temple in the city, because Yahweh Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of Yahweh gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life. (Revelation 21:2, 9-27)”

A Question for the “Zadokite Calendar” Keepers.

There is a resurgence in the movement of those advocating the Qumran Solar Calendar, calling it the “Zadokite Calendar” and claiming that the Qumran scrolls are actually the work of renegade sons of Zadok, a priestly caste banished from the Temple of Jerusalem by Greek rulers in 2nd century BC, and not Essenes at all. (My prior blog The Qumran Community were Essenes demonstrates conclusively that the Qumran scrolls are of Essene origin.)

It is interesting that these Zadokite Calendar advocates cherry pick the Qumran Solar Calendar, while ignoring most of the rest of the halacha in the Dead Sea Scrolls. If one is going to adopt the Qumran Solar Calendar on the basis that the Qumran Community were the true Zadokite priests banished from Jerusalem and were preserving the true customs, why would one not also adopt the Qumran Sabbath Halacha, which advocates allowing a man to die, rather than using a tool to rescue him on the Sabbath:

“No man shall eat on the Sabbath day aught save that which is prepared or perishing (in the field). Nor shall one eat or drink unless in the camp. (If he was) on the way and went down to wash he may drink where he stands, but he shall not draw into any vessel. … No man shall walk after the animal to pasture it outside his city more than two thousand cubits. None shall lift his hand to smite it with (his) fist. If it be stubborn he shall not remove it out of his house. No man shall carry anything from the house to the outside or from the outside into the house, and if he be in the vestibule he shall not carry anything out of it or bring in anything into it. … Let not the nursing father take the sucking child to go out or come in on the Sabbath. … No man shall help an animal in its delivery on the Sabbath day. And if it falls into a pit or ditch, he shall not raise it on the Sabbath. … And if any person falls into a place of water or into a place of… he shall not bring him up by a ladder or a cord or instrument. No man shall offer anything on the altar on the Sabbath, save the
burnt-offering of the Sabbath, for so it is written `Excepting your Sabbaths’.”
(Damascus Document 10:14-11:18)

Moreover, refusing to rescue an animal from a pit on the sabbath is a halacha that Yeshua specifically repudiated (Matt. 12:11).

Moreover, the Qumran scrolls prohibit traveling more than 1,000 cubits on the Sabbath:

“One may not travel outside his city more than 1,000 cubits… A man may not voluntarily cross Sabbath borders on the Sabbath Day. A man may walk behind an animal to graze it outside his city up to 2,000 cubits.” (Damascus Document 10, 20; 11, 3)

Whereas the Mishna permits travel up to 2,000 cubits in any direction:

“He who went forth [on the Sabbath] on a permissible mission, but they said to him, `The mission has already been completed,’ has two thousand cubits in every direction [in which to travel].” (m.Eruvin 4:3)

2,000 cubits (not 1,000 cubits) is exactly the distance called a “Sabbath Day’s Journey” in Acts 1:12. When Israel was in the wilderness, the “camp” had a radius of 2000 cubits in all directions (see m.Rosh HaShanna 2:5) and the “place outside the camp” where offering of the red heifer was made, was located at the Mount of Olives (m.Middot 1:3). Thus, when we read of the Emissaries that they: `Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day’s journey.’ (Acts 1:12) we are to understand (with the Mishna) that a “Sabbath Day’s Journey” is 2,000 cubits ( .7 miles) and not the 1,000 cubits set by the Qumran scrolls.

And finally the Qumran scrolls advocate the “Works of the Law” teaching that is so strongly repudiated by Paul (see my blog What do You Mean… Works the Law?)

It seems odd indeed to cherry pick the Qumran Calendar on the basis that the Qumran community were the true Zadokite priests in exile, while rejecting other elements of Qumran halacha. And yet, accepting these other elements of Qumran halacha would have to mean rejecting the very teachings of Yeshua and his Emissaries!

Why cherry pick the Qumran Calendar while rejecting much of the rest of the Qumran halacha?

In another blog soon, I will explain the true origins of the Qumran Solar calendar.

Thanks to all that donated over the last two days, helping us out of a deep hole! We will still need your help in coming days. I will have to pay for one of my wife’s medications which is nearly $250 (after insurance!) by Thursday. And rent will be due soon!

How to Celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles?

How to Celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles?
By
Rabbi Robert. O. Miller

“Yahweh had made the Egyptians favorably disposed toward the people, and they gave them what they asked for; so they plundered the Egyptians. The Israelites journeyed from Rameses to Sukkot. (Exodus 12:36)”

How do the Jews celebrate Sukkot? Since the dawn of time, people of every culture have gathered to celebrate the harvest, give thanks for the earth’s bounty and prepare for winter.  To most Jews Sukkot is the Hebrew version of this universal festival. They also believe It honors the Children of Israel who lived in temporary shelters as they wandered the desert for 40 years, waiting to receive the 10 Commandments and to enter the Promised Land.

They celebrate by building a sukah the day after Yom Kippur, ideally outside in your backyard.  The festival itself starts 4 days after the Day of Atonement. Their sukah resembles the shanties of Eatern Europe, a simple four-sided framework of wooden strips and decorate it with paper garlands, colorful paper cutouts, swaths of cloth and hanging fruits and vegetables. Lay tree branches or straw across the top to form the roof. Arrange them loosely so the moon and stars can shine through.  They Eat dinner in their sukah every night of the 8-day festival; some also sleep in it, but that is not a must.

On the first and eighth day they meet at the synagogue for a special service.  The four species are waved in the synagogue as part of the service during the holiday of Sukkot. Traditionally, they are not waved on Sabbath because bringing these items to the synagogue would violate the prohibition against carrying.

How do the Netzarim customs differ from our Jewish brethren?  I believe that can best be summed up in answer to the question, “Why did Yahweh direct the Children of Israel to Sukkot as soon as they left Egypt?” Sukkot was literally a portable city of tents hence the name.  I believe the reason the Children of Israel was brought to Sukkot was because the Children of Israel had lived 400 plus years in the limestone buildings of Egypt and they had forgotten how to live in tents. The people of Sukkot furnished both tents and the know how for the Children of Israel.   Yahweh knew they would be traveling for 40 years and they would need to know how to live in tents. The people

How’s that relate to us?  Well, as a people we do not know how to live in tents. So, once a year Yahweh commands us to learn how to live in tents.

“For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers, that our forefathers (Children of Israel) were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. They were all immersed into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Messiah. Nevertheless, Elohim was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered over the desert. Now these things occurred as examples…Now all these things happened unto them as examples and they are written for our  admonition upon whom the ends of the world are come (1 Corinthians 10:1-6, 11).”

Everything the Children of Israel went through was chronicled for us, the potential Second Exodus Generation, so that we would not make the same mistakes as they did. We will need to know how to live in tents during the SECOND EXODUS.  Allow me to give scriptural proofs of why I believe there will be a SECOND EXODUS, even Greater than the FIRST EXODUS:

Jeremiah 51:6-9,13; Mathew 24:16; Revelations 12:15,16; I Corinthians 10:11; Revelations 12:6; Micah 7:15; Hosea 2:1 & 15; Zechariah 2, 9, 10; Amos 9:11  Joel 2:28-31; Ezekiel 34:13 -25; Jeremiah 23:3,6 and John 10:16.

We have been told to “come out of Babylon” before its destruction.  Whether we realize it or not our hearts, soul and mind are already in the midst of the SECOND EXODUS.

    All our prophets speak consistently about the Ingathering of Yahweh people in the End-Time. Deuteronomy 32:21 Ezekiel 20:34; 34:11; 37:21; Jeremiah 23:3; Isaiah 11:11; 35:8; 65: 1I; Micah 2:12; Zephaniah 3:12; John 10:16; 1Peter 2:9,10.

    A 2nd Exodus brings about this Ingathering. Jeremiah 23:3,6; 51:6-9,13; Ezekiel 34:13 –25; Hosea 2:1 & 15; Zechariah 2, 9, 10; Micah 7:15; Amos 9:11; Joel 2:28-31 Mathew 24:16; John 10:16 I Corinthians 10:11; Revelations 12: 6,15,16

“Then if anyone says to you, “Look, here is the Messiah!’ or “There!’ do not believe it.  For false messiahs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.  See, I have told you beforehand.  Therefore if they say to you, “Look, He is in the desert!’ do not go out; or “Look, He is in the inner rooms!’ do not believe it.  For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.  For wherever the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered together. (Matthew 24:23-27)”

At this point Israel and the righteous Gentiles must decide which side they are on. (Amos 5:4-15)

“For behold, Yahweh will come with fire and with His chariots, like a whirlwind, to render His anger with fury, and His rebuke with flames of fire. For by fire and by His sword Yahweh will judge all flesh; and the slain of Yahweh shall be many.

Those who set themselves apart and purify themselves, to go to the gardens after an idol in the midst, eating swine’s flesh and the abomination (food offered to the Golem) and the mouse, shall be consumed together,” says Yahweh .

For I know their works and their thoughts. It shall be that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come and see My glory.  I will set a sign among them; and those among them who escape I will send to the nations: to Tarshish and Put (Jeremiah 46:9) and Lud, who draw the bow, and Tubal and Javan, to the coastlands afar off who have not heard My fame nor seen My glory. And they shall declare My glory among the Gentiles.  Then they shall bring all your brethren for an offering to Yahweh out of all nations, on horses and in chariots and in litters, on mules and on camels, to My holy mountain Jerusalem,” says Yahweh , “as the children of Israel bring an offering in a clean vessel into the house of Yahweh .  And I will also take some of them for priests and Levites,” says Yahweh . (Isaiah 66:15-21)”

As we gather in the Valley of Achor Yahweh betroths us.

“For Thy Maker is thine husband, Yahweh of Hosts is his name, and thy redeemer, the Holy One of (spiritual) Israel, the Elohim of the whole Earth shall He be called (Isa. 55: 5)

Hosea said  “Therefore I will allure her and bring her into the WILDERNESS, and speak comfortably unto her will give her vineyards from there, and the VALLEY OF ACHOR as a door of hope; and she shall sing there as in the days of her youth and AS IN THE DAY WHEN SHE CAME UP OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT. And it shall be, in that day,” says Yahweh , “That you will call Me “My Husband,’and no longer call Me “My Master,’” Hosea 2:14-16 written in 785 BCE for the End-Time. “I will betroth thee unto me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies. (Hosea 2:19)”

“…just as Messiah also loved the Assembly and gave Himself up for her; that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the Assembly in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she should be holy and blameless. (Eph. 5:25-27)”

“For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy; for I betrothed you to one husband, that to Messiah I might present you as a pure virgin. (2 Cor. 11:2)”

The prophet Isaiah said. “And He (Yahweh ) shall set up an ensign for the nations and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel (10 tribes and their companions) and GATHER together the dispersed of Judah (the Jews and their companions) from the four corners of the Earth. (from all over the world)….And they shall spoil them of the East TOGETHER, they shall lay their hand upon EDOM and MOAB and the children of Ammon (Jordan) shall obey them.

And Yahweh shall utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian Sea and with his mighty wind shall He shake his Hand over the RIVER and shall smite it in the seven streams, and make men go over dryshod…And there shall be an HIGHWAY for the Remnant of his people which shall be left, from Assyria, like as it was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt. (Isaiah 11: 12-16)

We will be headed down a highway along the mountain tops of MOAB and EDOM, following the same exact path as our forefathers.

And along the way there shall be battles, the biggest of which will be at the entrance of Bozrah (Petra) in Idumea (Edom, Southern Jordan). We fight exactly as described in the Dead Sea Scrolls according to the “War of the Sons of Light and the Sons of Darkness.”

“Come near, you nations, to hear; and heed, you people! Let the earth hear, and all that is in it, the world and all things that come forth from it…For My sword shall be bathed in heaven; indeed it shall come down on Edom, and on the people of My curse, for judgment. The sword of Yahweh is filled with blood; it is made overflowing with fatness, with the blood of lambs (martyrs) and goats (heathen), with the fat of the kidneys of rams. For Yahweh has a sacrifice in Bozrah (Petra), and a great slaughter in the land of Edom. (Isaiah 34:1,5,6)”

“The wilderness and the wasteland shall be glad for them, and the desert shall rejoice and blossom as the rose; it shall blossom abundantly and rejoice, even with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the excellence of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of Yahweh , the Excellency of our Elohim. Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are fearful-hearted, “Be strong, do not fear! Behold, your Elohim will come with vengeance, with the recompense of Elohim; He will come and save you.”  Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the dumb sing. For waters shall burst forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert. The parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water; in the habitation of jackals, where each lay, there shall be grass with reeds and rushes. A highway shall be there, and a road, and it shall be called the Highway of Holiness. The unclean shall not pass over it, but it shall be for others. Whoever walks the road, although a fool, shall not go astray. (Isaiah 35:1-8)”

“When He opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the spirits of those who had been slain for the word of Yahweh and for the testimony which they held. And they cried with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?”Then a white robe was given to each of them; and it was said to them that they should rest a little while longer, until both the number of their fellow servants and their brethren, who would be killed as they were, was completed. (Revelation 6:9-11)”

“Oh that I had in the WILDERNESS, a lodging place of WAYFARING MEN (and WOMEN.. Jeremiah 9:2).

“…the woman (the bride, the Commonwealth of Israel, the called out ones) fled into the WILDERNESS, where she hath a place prepared of Yahweh that they should feed her there (literally) a thousand two hundred and three score days (3 ½ years or half of 7 years, that’s the same period of time as the 42 months of the holy city, Jerusalem, being trampled under foot and that the two witnesses minister) (Revelations 12:6)

“…unless those days were shortened (by 3 ½ years), no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened. (Matthew 24:22)”

The Bride of Messiah flees from the serpent, the great red dragon, also called the Devil by going into the wilderness where we have ‘ a place prepared of Yahweh , that they (the angels) will feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days’ (1260 days = 42 months = 3 and ½ years) (Revelation 12: 6, 14).

“…the woman was given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness to her place, where she is nourished for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent. So the serpent spewed water out of his mouth like a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away by the flood. But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the flood which the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of Yahweh and have the testimony of Messiah YahShua. (Revelation 12:14-17)”

“For thy shall not hunger nor thirst: neither shall the heat nor sun smite them (because Yahwehs cloud shall be over us once again) for He (Yahweh ) that hath MERCY on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall He guide them. (Psalm 23)  And I (Yahweh ) will make all my mountains a Way, and my HIGHWAY shall be exalted. (Isaiah 49: 10,11)”

And as Micah in 710 BCE so apply stated, “According to the DAYS (or pattern) of thy coming out of Egypt will I show unto him marvelous things. The nations shall be confused at all their MIGHT. (For we shall be powerfull in Yahweh ), they shall lay their hand upon their mouth, their ears shall be deaf…..they shall be AFRAID of Yahweh our Elohim (they will convert from Islam to Judaism), and shall fear because of Him. (Micah 7: 15, 16)

How are we to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles?

“Yahweh said to Moses, ‘Say to the Israelites: ‘”On the fifteenth day of the seventh month Yahweh’s Feast of Tabernacles begins, and it lasts for seven days. The first day is a sacred assembly; do no regular work. For seven days present offerings made to Yahweh by fire, and on the eighth day hold a sacred assembly and present an offering made to Yahweh by fire. It is the closing assembly; do no regular work…Live in tents for seven days: All native-born Israelites are to live in tents so your descendants will know that I had the Israelites live in tents when I brought them out of Egypt. I am Yahweh your Elohim.’ “(Leviticus 23:33-36, 42, 43)”

“On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work. Celebrate a festival to Yahweh for seven days. Present an offering made by fire as an aroma pleasing to Yahweh…(Numbers 29:12, 13)”

    (1) On the 15th of Tishri we come together in a worship service and worship.  The first day is a Sabbath – we do no work.

    (2) For seven days we offer incense to Yahweh.

    (3) For seven days we live in tabernacles or tents.

    (4) On the eighth day we come together in a worship service and worship.  The first day is a Sabbath – we do no work.

“After the harvest from your threshing floor and your vineyards, you shall celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles for seven days. (Deuteronomy 16:13)”

Sukkot is known as hag-ha-asif, the Festival of Ingathering. The Torah says:

“You shall celebrate the Festival of Ingathering, at the end of the year, when you gather in your labors out of the field. (Exodus 23:16)”

Since Sukkot is a harvest festival, we celebrate by also waving something called a “lulav” and “etrog.” The commandment regarding the four species is found in the Torah. After discussing the week-long Sukkot  festival, specific instructions for how to celebrate the holiday are given. Leviticus 23:40 instructs: “On the first day you shall take the product of hadar trees, branches of palm trees, boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before Yahweh  your Elohim seven days.” These are the four species that form the lulav and etrog.  The four species are waved before Yahweh each evening.

Sukkot was actually referred to as ha-chag, the festival, (Kings 12:32).  King Solomon chose Sukkot as the holiday during which he consecrated the Holy Temple. It was also the occasion every seven years for the ceremony hak’heil, the public reading of the Torah before the whole people (Deuteronomy 31:10-13). Sukkot is also said to be the festival of the future, when in the messianic period, all nations will come to Jerusalem and celebrate.

“And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall go up from year to year to worship the King, Yahweh of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. And it shall be that whichever of the families of the earth do not come up to Jerusalem to worship the King, Yahweh of hosts, on them there will be no rain. If the family of Egypt will not come up and enter in, they shall have no rain; they shall receive the plague with which Yahweh strikes the nations who do not come up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. This shall be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not come up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. (Zechariah 14:16-19)”

King Messiah YahShua kept the Feast of Tabernacles. This is discussed in detail in John chapter 7:10-26: “But when His brothers had gone up, then He also went up to the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. Then the Jews sought Him at the feast, and said, “Where is He?” And there was much complaining among the people concerning Him. Some said, “He is good”; others said, “No, on the contrary, He deceives the people.” However, no one spoke openly of Him for fear of the Jews. Now about the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and taught. And the Jews marveled, saying, “How does this Man know letters, having never studied?”  Rebbe YahShua answered them and said, “My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. If anyone wants to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from Yahweh or whether I speak on My own authority. He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him. Did not Moses give you the law, yet none of you keeps the law? Why do you seek to kill Me?” The people answered and said, “You have a demon. Who is seeking to kill You?” Rebbe YahShua answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you all marvel. Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath? Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.” Now some of them from Jerusalem said, “Is this not He whom they seek to kill? But look! He speaks boldly, and they say nothing to Him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is truly the Messiah?”

Rabbi Sha’ul even after the Messiah’s death and resurrection indicated that it was important to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. As it is noted in Acts 18:21: “I must by all means keep this coming feast in Jerusalem; but I will return again to you, Yahweh willing.”

We believe that the Sukkoth shows the righteous one-thousand-year reign of our soon-coming King YahShua, Zechariah 14:16. A time of peace, prosperity and happiness shall prevail when YahShua rules, putting into effect the laws of His Father Yahweh, which are especially studied during the Sukkoth, showing our faith in Yahweh’s eventual sovereignty over the entire earth. A commanded Assembly where Yahweh has placed His name, Sukkoth is observed seven days starting on the 15th day of the seventh month (Tishri 15 through 21), the first day is the sixth Annual Sabbath, Leviticus 23:34-36, and 43; Numbers 29:12. The Feast of Tabernacles lasts seven days, plus the Last Great Day, which YahShua the Messiah observed, John 7:37, making it an eight-day celebration.

I hope this answers your questions.

Chag Semeach! & Happy Holidays!

Codification of Yeshua’s Halachot

Shalom Chaverim,

I wanted to give you all an update on my work on a codification of Nazarene Halachot under the title HaDerek Laleket הַדֶּרֶךְ לָלֶכֶת (The Way to Walk).

I have completed the opening section, Part I which presents the “Middot” “principles” of Yeshua’s halachot. The purpose of this opening section, is to explore the principles Yeshua used in presenting those halachic issues which he specifically addresses in the Ketuvim Netzarim, so that we can apply these same principles to matters of halacha which he did not directly address.

In Part II I will present the halacha that Yeshua actually addressed, as well as that addressed by the Emissaries, and explore them in light of these principles. I will also address other matters of halacha necessary for a Torah Observant community to function, which were not specifically addressed by Yeshua or his Emissaries, by applying these same principles. (this part of the work may take months or years to complete.)

I invite you all to read Part I and explore the Middot which I have derived from Yeshua’s teachings, that can now be applied to developing and codifying a complete Nazarene Halacha.

The Armor of Elohim and the Four Labors of Wisdom

The Armor of Elohim
and the
Four Labors of Wisdom
By
James Scott Trimm

In this article things will really start coming together and two lines of articles I have written in the past will finally converge.

The first is a series of past articles on the Full Armor of Elohim:

Are You Naked? The Full Armor of Elohim
Moses and the Armor of Elohim
The Full Armor of Elohim

The other is a series of recent articles on the Four Labors of Wisdom:

Storing up Treasure in Heaven: The Four Labors of Wisdom
And a River Went Out of Eden: Philo’s Midrash on the Four Labors of Wisdom

Today’s article will bring this altogether and demonstrate that there is a direct relationship between the Full Armor of Elohim and the Four Labors of Wisdom.

In our previous articles we cited the following passage from The Wisdom of Solomon concerning the “Four Labors of Wisdom” also known as the “Four Virtues”:

5  If riches are a desirable possession in life,
what is richer than wisdom who effects all things?
6  And if understanding is effective,
who more than she is fashioner of what exists?
7  And if any one loves righteousness,
her labors are virtues;
for she teaches self-control and prudence,
justice and courage;
nothing in life is more profitable for men than these.
(Wisdom of Solomon 8:5-7 RSV)

In another article we learned about Philo’s Midrash on Genesis 2:10 which teaches that generic virtue goes out as an unceasing and everlasting flow from the Word (logos) of Elohim to increase and nourish specific virtues in the souls of those that love Elohim and that from there generic virtue is marked off by fixed boundaries as prudence (rational judgment), courage, self-control, and justice and that each of these is a ruler and a queen that helps us to rule over our passions.

The Fourth Book of Maccabees (which has sometimes been titled “On the Supremacy of Reason) we learn much more about these four Labors of Wisdom, or “virtues” which 4Maccabees calls “Four Kinds of Wisdom”:

Now the kinds of wisdom are rational judgment, justice, courage, and self-control.
(4Macc. 1:18)

4Maccabees goes on to say:

Rational judgment is supreme over all of these, since by means of it reason (Logos) rules over the emotions.
(4Macc. 1:19)

This agrees with Philo’s midrash on Gen. 2:10 that generic virtue goes out as an unceasing and everlasting flow from the Word (logos) of Elohim to increase and nourish the Four Virtues in our souls.

4 Maccabees gives us a working definition of “reason” (Logos):

Now reason (Logos) is the mind that with sound logic prefers the life of wisdom.
(4Macc. 1:15)

Followed by a working definition for “wisdom”:

16  Wisdom, next, is the knowledge of divine and human matters and the causes of these.
17 This, in turn, is education in the Torah, by which we learn divine matters reverently and human affairs to our advantage.
(4Macc. 1:16-17)

Thus learning Torah brings wisdom and living Torah produces a “life of wisdom” which is the kind of life preferred by “the mind with sound logic” and this sound logic of Torah is the Logos (Word, Reason).  This is stated more plainly later in the book:

21 Now when Elohim fashioned man, he planted in him emotions and inclinations,
22 but at the same time he enthroned the mind among the senses as a sacred governor over them all.
23 To the mind he gave the Torah; and one who lives subject to this will rule a kingdom that is temperate, just, good, and courageous.
(4Macc. 2:21-23)

4Maccabees Chapters 5-7 cites the story of Eliezer (2Macc. 6:18-31) to illustrate this concept, saying:

“No city besieged with many ingenious war machines has ever held out as did that most holy man. Although his sacred life was consumed by tortures and racks, he conquered the besiegers with the shield of his devout reason (Logos).”
(4Macc. 7:4 RSV)

The Aramaic version reads:

No city besieged ever held out against mighty vassals coming against its walls and its various parts like this. He was dressed in all the armor. For while his soul was suffering, consumed by torture, and by tribulation, and by burning, he conquered the tribulation because of his mind was fighting with the shield of truth.
(4Macc. 7:4 – Aramaic)

And 4Maccabees 8-18 cites the story of Hannah and her seven sons (2Macc. 7; b.Gittin 57b) to illustrate this concept, saying:

Therefore let us put on the full armor of self-control, which is divine reason (Logos).
(4Macc. 13:16 RSV)

The Aramaic version reads:

Therefore put on the full armor of authority over the passions, which belongs to the mind that fears Eloah.
(4Macc. 13:16 Aramaic)

There is a direct relationship between the Full Armor of Elohim and these Four Labors of Wisdom!

We must raise at least $550 by the end of the day today, or our account will go into the negative and start a chain reaction of returned items and fees.

If you can make a one time donation of $500 or $1,000 dollars to support this work, now is the time to step up to the plate, as we are in a budget shortfall.

Do not expect that the established religious denominations are going to be reformed and accomplish this paradigm shift. They are to set in their ways to be of any use to Elohim. To the contrary the established religious leaders are the single greatest deterrent to the promotion of the truth today.

We cannot do this work alone, but if we work together we can accomplish so much. So don’t forget to support this work with your contributions, tithes and offerings.

You make this work possible. Please help us bring the message of Torah and Messiah to a lost world and create Scripture study materials for believers.

Now is time to step up to the plate!
