Zechariah Sees an Angel! (The Rest of the Story)

Zechariah Sees an Angel (The Rest of the Story)
By
James Scott Trimm

We read in the book of Luke, an account of Z’kharyah’s (Zechariah’s) vision of the angel Gavri’el (Gabriel)

5 There was, in the days of Herod, the king of Y’hudah, one Cohen who was named Z’kharyah, from the division of the house of Aviyah: and his wife from the daughters of Aharon, whose name was Elisheva.
6 And both of them were righteous before Eloah, and were walking in all His commandments, and in the righteousness of YHWH; without blame in all their ways.
7 But they had no son because Elisheva was barren, and both of them advanced in days.
8 And it happened (that) while he was serving as Cohen in the order of his service before Eloah,
9 In the custom of the priesthood, it came that he was to place the incense. And he entered the Temple ,
10 And all the crowd of people were standing and praying outside, at the time of incense.
11 And an angel of YHWH, who stood at the right side of the altar of incense, appeared to Z’kharyah.
12 And he was agitated: and trembled when he saw the angel, and fear fell upon him.
13 And the angel said to him, Do not fear, Z’kharyah, because Eloah has heard the sound of your prayer. And your wife, Elisheva, will bear to you a son, and you will call his name Yochanan,
14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice in his birth.
15 For he will be great before YHWH, and will not drink wine or strong drink. And he will be filled with the Ruach HaKodesh, while he is in the womb of his mother.
16 And he will turn many of the sons of Yisrael, to YHWH their Eloah.
17 And he will go before Him, in the spirit, and in the might of Eliyahu, the prophet: that he might turn the heart of the fathers unto the children, and those who are disobedient, to the knowledge of the just. And he will prepare for YHWH a wholehearted people.
18 And Z’kharyah said to the angel, How will I know this? For I am old and my wife is advanced in age.
19 And the angel answered and said to him, I am Gavri’el, because I stand before Eloah: and I have been sent to speak with you, and to declare these (things).
20 Now you will be dumb and not able to speak, until the day that these (things) occur, because you did not believe my words that will be fulfilled in their season.
21 Now the people were standing and waiting for Z’kharyah, and they wondered about his delay in the Temple.
22 And when Z’kharyah came out, he was not able to speak with them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the Temple. And he anxiously made signs to them, but remained dumb.
23 And after the days of his service were fulfilled, he went to his house.
(Luke 1:5-23 HRV)

There are so many misconceptions about this event. First of all, Z’kharyah was not the High Priest, because all of the High Priests were supposed to be descendants of the High Priest in King David’s time (Zadok), and because Z’kharyah was serving in the course of Abijah. Moreover, the High Priests of this time were all pretenders who had purchased the office from the Romans, we know the names of all the High Priests in this time, and Z’kharyah was not one of them. The misunderstanding that Z’kharyah was performing the Yom Kippur incense offering has led to the false belief that he was the High Priest (which is why so many artistic representations of the event, show him in the garb of the High Priest) has led to a false teaching that Yochanan, as his son, was the true High Priest.

This event, was in fact, the daily incense offering. made in the Temple by a priest chosen by drawing of lots.

What Luke calls the “customs” of the Priesthood, are traditions of the Oral Law in regards to the Temple ceremonies.

In this case the Mishna gives us some great insight into these events. The Priesthood served in 24 courses, the course of Abijah was the 8th (1Chron. 24). It was such an honor to offer the incense that only the priests who had never performed the ritual were allowed to particulate in the drawing of lots, so that a priest was only afforded this honor once in his lifetime (m.Tamid 5:2).

The people “were standing and praying outside” (Luke 1:10) because “the people departed” (m.Tamid 6:3) before the incense was offered, leaving the priest performing the ritual alone in the holy place.

The angel appeared on the right side of the alter of incense (Luke 1:11) This would have been the south side of the alter between the alter itself and the gold menorah.

After making the offering Z’kharyah would have “prostrated himself and went out” (m.Tamid 6:3) where he was to have “stood on the steps of the porch” (m.Tamid 7:2) these were the fifteen steps, where he would have “said one blessing for the people” (m.Tamid 7:2) meaning that he was to have the honor of pronouncing the Aaronic blessing (Numbers 6:24-26). It is then that the people would have realized that something had happened, as Zechariah could not speak.

Why was he troubled? Why did fear fall upon him when the angel appeared? On the contrary one might expect him to be overjoyed to see an angel in the Temple. Some background to this story gives the account much more meaning. Pharisees and Sadducees differed as to how they believed the incense offering was to be made. Sadducees controlled the priesthood and the Temple (because most priests were Sadducees) but Pharisees were the majority and thus controlled the people and the courts. According to the Mishna (m.Yoma 1:5) the Pharisees would use the power of the Rabbinical courts to require the priests to agree to perform the Temple services according to the traditional method handed down by the elders and not to alter it based on Sadducee understandings and interpretations by bringing the incense into the Holy of Holies. All of this was needed because a Sadducee Priest had once taken it upon himself to alter the service of incense offering to follow the method of the Sadducees, who rejected the Oral Law. As we read in the Talmud:

HE TURNED ASIDE AND WEPT AND THEY TURNED ASIDE AND WEPT. He turned aside and wept because they suspected him of being a Sadducee, and they turned aside and wept, for R. Joshua b. Levi said: Whosoever suspects good folks will suffer [for it] on his own body. Why was all this [solemn adjuration] necessary? Lest he arrange the incense outside and thus bring it in, in the manner of the Sadducees.

Our Rabbis taught: There was a Sadducee who had arranged the incense without, and then brought it inside. As he left he was exceedingly glad. On his coming out his father met him and said to him: My son, although we are Sadducees, we are afraid of the Pharisees. He replied: All my life was I aggrieved because of this scriptural verse: For I appear in the cloud upon the ark-cover. I would say: When shall the opportunity come to my hand so that I might fulfil it. Now that such opportunity has come to my hand, should I not have fulfilled it? It is reported that it took only a few days until he died and was thrown on the dung heap and worms came forth from his nose. Some say: He was smitten as he came out [of the Holy of Holies]. For R. Hiyya taught: Some sort of a noise was heard in the Temple Court, for an angel had come and struck him down on his face [to the ground] and his brethren the priests came in and they found the trace as of a calf’s foot on his shoulder, as it is written: And their feet were straight feet, and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf’s foot.
(b.Yoma 19b)

And this is why Z’kharyah was troubled and fearful when the angel appeared to him in the Temple after he had offered incense. Z’kharyah was almost certainly aware of this story and thus must have been worried that he had somehow offered the incense incorrectly and that the angel had appeared in order to strike him down. The angel was aware of this and immediately told Z’kharyah “Fear not…”.

I is also significant that Z’kharyah, whom Scripture says was “righteous before Eloah” (Luke 1:6) was participating in all of these practices of the Oral Law, in fulfilling his duties in his course, serving as a priest in the Temple!

So as Paul Harvey would have said, now you know the rest of the story!

We need your help today! We must raise at least $400 by the end of the day today, to cover bills hitting our account tonight. And our rent is due tomorrow!

The time is short, and there is much work to be done. This is no time to pull back from the great work in front of us!

As you know we have been digging ourselves out of a budget shortfall.  As I have said to you many times, I look on this work as a co-operative one with me, and all of you combining our resources together in order to get the job done of helping to teach this great truth to all in the world who will listen. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for your continued support, you are the ones who make it all possible by your contributions and your prayers for our work. Was there a Conflict Between Paul and James?

Was there a Conflict Between Paul and James?
By
James Scott Trimm

Paul writes:

20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Yeshua the Messiah unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
(Romans 3:20-22)

Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Yeshua the Messiah, even we have believed in Yeshua the Messiah, that we might be justified by the faith of Messiah, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
(Galatians 2:16)

However, Ya’akov HaTzadik (James the Just) writes:

You see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
(Ya’akov (James) 2:24)

From this apparent contradiction comes the misunderstanding that there was some disagreement between Paul and Ya’akov concerning justification by faith and works.

Part of the problem has to do with the misunderstanding of Paul concerning terms like “under the law” and “works of the law“. However another key issue here is the meaning of the words “righteous” or “just” (the same word in Hebrew and Aramaic).

The underlying Hebrew word for “righteousness” is צדקה Tz’dakah which can refer to an act of righteousness as in Isaiah 32:17 מעשה הצדקה “work of righteousness” but can also be used as a synonym for “salvation” thus it is used in synonymous parallelism with ישועה in Psalm 71:15:

My mouth shall show forth your righteousness
and your salvation all the day;
for I know not the numbers thereof.
(Psalm 71:15)

These are two different meanings that this Hebrew word can have. So there is no contradiction between what Paul is saying and what Ya’akov is saying. Paul is using the term as a synonym for salvation, while Ya’akov is using the word to refer to a “work of righteousness”.

This distinction in meaning can be seen in the use in Luke 7:29:

And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being immersed with the immersion of Yochanan.
(Luke 7:29)

Certainly these people were not saving Elohim, but were instead performing a work of righteousness.

When we understand the writing of Paul and Ya’akov from the original Hebrew and Aramaic, we see that there is no contradiction in what they are each saying about faith and works. Paul is saying that we are saved by faith not works, and Ya’akov is saying that we display our justification by works of righteousness.

My wife was originally to have surgery on Wednesday the second. I am sorry to say that surgery has had to be postponed until Feb. 9th. We found out there would be a co-pay for the surgery, of which we were not previously aware. The fact is that the rent was due on the first (and must clear our account Monday) so we had no choice but to postpone the surgery, whether we liked it or not.

The time is short, and there is much work to be done. This is no time to pull back from the great work in front of us!

The Hebrew and Jewish Origin of 1Esdras

The Book of 1Esdras (one of the books of the “Apocrypha”) has been given various names. In the Greek LXX this book is titled IEsdras while our canonical books of Ezra and Nehemiah combined are titled 2Esdras. In the Latin Vulgate our book of Ezra is 1Esdras; Nehemish is 2Esdras and this book is titled “3Esdras” In the KJV it is titled “1Esdras”.

1Esdras is synoptic (parallel) to Ezra-Nehemiah and reproduces the material of 2Chron. 35:1-36:23; most of Ezra and Neh. 7:38-8:12 along with one added story. The added story (3:1-5:6) recounts how three of Darius’ guards (one of whom is Zerubbabel) debate which is strongest: wine; the king, women or truth. Zerubbabel argues that women are stronger than a king, but that truth is stronger than either. His argument is so good that Darius rewards him by allowing him to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple.

This book is clearly of ancient Jewish origin. The first century Jewish Historian Josephus tends to follow 1Ezra rather than the canonical account in Ezra Nehemiah in his history of the time period. Also Josephus regards the additional story as fact and includes a version of this story (Ant. 11:3:2) in his Antiquities of the Jews.

The book of 1Ezra was originally written in Hebrew, but the Hebrew seems to have been lost since 1611. All modern translations have been made from the Greek version. The original Hebrew seems to have survived as recently as 1611 because the translators of the 1611 Edition KJV included marginal notes to their text of “1Esdras” giving alternate renderings of words from “the Hebrew” (in such passages as 3:13; 4:14; 7:5, 9; 8:23, 32, 50, 57, 66, 79, 96). At least two of these marginal notes are to words found in the added section (3:1-5:6) and thus they could not have referred to parallel readings in Ezra/Nehemiah.

We must raise at least $1,840 by the end of the day Friday to clear rent and electric!

I am telling you all this for two reasons. First of all the rent is due today, and at this point we do not have it. Secondly to highlight just how serious things have become in the last few months financially. Over the summer, the person who had been our largest single contributor for the previous two years, notified us that they would have to drastically reduce their giving. Then just as their donations decreased, another long time contributor stepped up and started giving some large donations. Unfortunately this person has not been able to donate at all in about two months. These donations helped us pay off some bills to lower our monthly budget and even gave us a small safety net for a while. But that safety net has now been completely depleted. So much so that we have had to postpone my wife’s surgery and prioritize the rent (which even then, we still do not have the rent covered yet).

Red Alert: Urgent! Situation Critical

Update Tuesday Feb. 2nd:

Shalom Chaverim,

There is a midrash that tells us that before YHWH parted the red sea, he required the children of Israel to first start waling into the water. They did not know how YHWH would deliver them, but they had to have faith that he would. Only then did he part the sea, and so completely that the ground on which they walked was bone dry.

Today I find myself in a similar situation. Tomorrow (the end of our “grace period”), we will be paying the rent electronically on faith, despite the fact that we are currently still $1,840 short on clearing the rent and electric bill which should hit our account on Friday or maybe Monday.

Me need a miracle!

We must raise at least $1,940 by the end of the day Friday to clear rent and electric!

Ramban on the Authenticity of the Wisdom of Solomon

Ramban on the Authenticity of the Wisdom of Solomon
by
James Scott Trimm

The Wisdom of Solomon is one of the books found in the “Apocrypha”. According to Melito in the second century CE, the Wisdom of Solomon was in his day considered canonical by both Jews and Christians.

Ramban (Rabbi Moshe ben Nachman) (1194-1270 C.E.) wrote one of the most authoritative Torah commentaries in Rabbinic Judaism.  In his Introduction to his Commentary to the Torah Ramban quotes from an Aramaic version of the Wisdom of Solomon and takes these quotes as the authentic words of Solomon:

King Solomon, peace be upon him, whom G-d had given wisdom and knowledge, derived it all from the Torah, and from it he studied until he knew the secret of all things created, even of the forces and characteristics of plants, so that he wrote about them even a Book of Medicine, as it is written, And he spoke of trees, from the cedar that is in Lebanon even unto the hyssop that springeth out of the wall (1Kings 5:13)

Now I have seen the Aramaic translation of the book called The Great Wisdom of Solomon, and in it is written: “There is nothing new in the birth of a king or ruler; there is one entrance for all people into the world, and one exit alike. Therefore I have prayed, and the spirit of wisdom was given to me, and I have called out and the spirit of knowledge came to me; I chose it above scepter and throne.” (Wisdom 7:3-8) And it is further said there: “It is G-d alone Who gives knowledge that contains no falsehood, [enabling one] to know how the world arose, the composition of the constellations, the beginning, the end and middle of the times, the angles of the ends of the constellations, and how the seasons are produced by the movement of heavens and the fixed positions of the stars, the benign nature of cattle and the fierceness of beasts, the power of the wind and the thoughts of man, the relationship of trees and the forces of roots; everything hidden and everything revealed I know.” (Wisdom 7:17-21)  All this Solomon knew from the Torah, and he found everything in it – in its simple meanings, in the subtleties of its expressions and its letters and its strokes, as I have mentioned.
(Ramban; The Introduction to the Commentary on the Torah)

Ramban had studied the Aramaic (Peshitta?) version of the Wisdom of Solomon and was convinced that it recorded the actual words of Solomon!  There is much for us to learn from this very important book.
