Restoring Truth: Changing a Paradigm

A group or set of theories and methods which guide any area of scholarship is a “paradigm”.  A paradigm is a typical example or pattern of something; a model.

We think of science as moving gradually as it accumulates more knowledge in an onward and upward journey toward truth, but in actual practice science jumps in quantum leaps from one paradigm to the next.  Once a paradigm is accepted, most scientific endeavor is spent working out the details of the paradigm.  In the course of these endeavors anomalies appear, that is to say experiments produce information which does not fit the paradigm.  This data is generally set aside in the belief that further research will resolve the problems raised by the anomalies.  Eventually a fresh mind, usually one not to steeped in the current paradigm to think outside the box presents one or more ideas that shatter the current paradigm and creates a new, more accurate paradigm.  Each scholar must then choose to remain in the old paradigm, or move on to the new one.  Thomas Khun points this choice is not always rooted in logic:

“The competition between paradigms is not the sort of battle that can be resolved by proofs.  In fact the transfer of allegiance from one paradigm to another is a conversion experience that cannot be forced.”
(Science; July 8, 1977; p. 144)

There is not so much a gradual transition from one paradigm to another, but a “conversion experience”, a quantum leap from one paradigm to another.

There cannot be a gradual transition between paradigms because they each represent foundationally different views.  It is very difficult for proponents of one paradigm to communicate with proponents of another, because they represent drastically and foundationally different views.  The concepts they are using are simply not comparable.

For example physics once held to the paradigm of Newtonian Physics.  Under the paradigm of Newtonian physics mass is always conserved and gravity is an effect of every particle of mass upon every other particle of mass.  However Albert Einstein destroyed this paradigm with his theories of relativity which proposed a new paradigm in which mass could be converted to an equal amount of energy, and gravity is not an effect of mass upon mass, but an effect of mass upon time-space.  We would not have atomic energy today if physicists were still operating on the Newtonian Paradigm.

Paradigm replacement is a painful process.  The establishment always reacts in favor of the status quo against new paradigms.

Those of us who believe that the “New Testament” was originally written in Hebrew and Aramaic have a natural interest in Textual Criticism.  We want to improve our understanding of textual criticism and improve our ability to communicate intelligently with others.  To do this we read books and articles written by Greek Primacists (those who believe in a Greek origin for the New Testament) and this presents a problem.  How can we evaluate what they have written?  Scholars do not write in a vacuum.  Their interpretations of the evidence are influenced or biased by prevailing textual theories and opinion.  They are working within a paradigm that assumes a Greek origin for the texts they are working with.  The idea that the “New Testament” was actually written in Hebrew and Aramaic is a new paradigm and the establishment has and will resist it.

The idea that Yeshua did not come to create a new religion, but to be the Jewish Messiah of Judaism is a new paradigm.  This idea shatters not only the paradigm accepted by Christendom, but that accepted by Rabbinic Judaism as well.  The religious establishment (both Jewish and Christian) will resist this new paradigm.  It will take a “conversion experience” for them to accept the completely new paradigm presented by the restoration of the ancient sect of Nazarene Judaism.

I am humbled by the fact that this ministry is on the cutting edge of this great last days restoration.  We are presenting a whole new paradigm!

This is no time to bask serenely in an attitude of apathy, but we need to stir up the fires of enthusiasm for teaching the truth to the world. I am convinced that Elohim will bless us abundantly if we do. Elohim will soon be opening the doors of opportunity as never before, I hope that each of us (and all of us together) will advance through those doors with all of the energy and confidence YHWH can give His people. This is the time to act.

I need your support to continue this work! Donations are low and expenses are up. If donations don’t pick up very quickly, we are going to find ourselves homeless. I cannot make it any plainer than that. The restoration is upon us! But the Enemy will stop at nothing in his attacks! I am asking for your help, now more than ever.

We need your help to continue the ongoing work, bringing the message of Messiah to the Jewish people, and bringing the message of Torah to the world. We need your help with the ongoing work of Scripture Restoration, as restore the original Hebrew of the “New Testament” books, a project which will bless all mankind, especially the Jewish people of Israel.

In these uncertain times, we need your support more than ever. The time is short, and there is much work to be done. As you might imagine, donations are low. If you can, please donate. This is no time to pull back from the great work in front of us!

Donations in April have been very, very low. This is common each year with tax time taking a bite out of people’s pocket books. Unfortunately, our expenses have not decreased during the tax season.

The last two years have been a real trial for us, and the last two months especially so. As you all probably know, our lives have never been the same since my wife returned home from a nearly two month hospitalization and septic shock in 2018.

Then recently in October 2020 my wife was hospitalized for two weeks and and had two surgeries beginning October 9th. She was sent home with a antibiotic resistant infection, under home health care with I.V. antibiotics at home, with visiting nurses. Not long after we got home, we both started having Covid-19 symptoms (mine were only mild), and we both tested positive for Covid-19 (we survived).

Then in late February we were caught in the Texas Snowpocalypse (See that story here)

Just a few days ago my wife was given some follow up tests after her October 2020 hospitalization, and now she has a dilated kidney. They are doing more tests to determine how serious it is.

Is there Profit in Circumcision? Light from Hillel’s Sixth Rule

Is there Profit in Circumcision?
Light from Hillel’s Sixth Rule
By
James Scott Trimm

The Sixth Rule of Hillel unlocks the true meaning of Galatians 5:2.  In arguing against circumcision many will cite Gal. 5:2. Interestingly there is an apparent contradiction between Gal. 5:2 and Rom. 3:1-2:

Behold, I Paul say to you, that if you be circumcised,
Christ shall profit you nothing.
(Gal. 5:2 KJV)

What advantage then hath the Jew?
or what profit is there of circumcision?
Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them
were committed the oracles of God.
(Rom. 3:1-2 KJV)

So what is the profit in circumcision? Is it “nothing” as we read in Gal. 5:2 or “much every way” as we read in Romans 3:1-2?

In order to answer this question, we shall make use of the sixth of Hillel’s seven rules.
The Seven Rules of Hillel

The Seven Rules of Hillel are a list of hermeneutic rules compiled by Hillel (60 BCE – 20 CE?).   Hillel and Shamai were competitive leading figures in Judaism during the days of Yeshua’s youth. Hillel was known for teaching the Spirit of the Law and Shamai was known for teaching the letter of the Law. Yeshua’s teaching largely followed that of the School of Hillel rather than that of the School of Shamai (an exception being Yeshua agreeing with Shamai regarding divorce in Matthew 19:9).

For example, Yeshua’s famous “golden rule”: Whatever you would that men should do to you, do you even to them, for this is the Torah and the Prophets. (Matthew 7:12)

This reads very closely with Hillel’s famous statement: What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor that is the whole Torah … (b.Shabbat 31a)

Upon Hillel’s death the mantle of the School of Hillel was passed to his son Simeon. Upon Simon’s death the mantle of the school of Hillel passed to Gamliel. This Gamilel spoke in defense of the early Nazarenes (Acts 5:34-39). He was the teacher of Shaul/Paul (Acts 22:3).

In 2 Tim. 2:15, Paul speaks of “rightly dividing the word of truth.” What did Paul mean by this? Was he saying that there were right and wrong ways to interpret the scriptures? Did Paul believe there were actual rules to be followed when interpreting (understanding) the Scriptures? Was Paul speaking of the Seven Rules of Hillel?

Paul was certainly taught these rules in the School of Hillel by Hillel’s own grandson Gamliel. When we examine Paul’s writings we will see that they are filled with usages of Hillel’s Seven Rules (several examples appear below). It would appear then that the Seven Rules of Hillel are at least part of what Paul was speaking of when he spoke of “rightly dividing the Word of truth.”
The Sixth Rule of Hillel

The Sixth Rule reads:  Kayotze bo mimekom akhar (Analogy made from another passage)

This rule means that two passages may seem to conflict until compared with a third, which has points of general though not necessarily verbal similarity.

The following are some examples of this rule applied to understanding the Tanak:

Leviticus 1:1 “out of the tent of meeting” and Exodus 25:22 “from above the ark of the covenant between the chrubim” seem to disagree until we examine Num. 7:89 where we learn that Moses entered the tent of meeting to hear YHWH speaking from between the cherubim.

1 Chronicles 27:1 explained the numerical disagreement between 2 Samuel 24:9 and 1 Chronicles 21:5.

Exodus 19:20 “YHWH came down upon Mount Sinai” seems to disagree with Deuteronomy 4:36, “Out of Heaven He let you hear His voice.” Exodus 20:19 (20:22 in some editions) reconciles the two by telling us that Elohim brought the heavens down to the mount and spoke. (m.Sifra 1:7)

An example from Romans: Paul shows that the following Tenach passages SEEM to conflict:

The just shall live by faith (Romans 1:17 = Habakkuk 2:4) with There is none righteous, no, not one … (Romans 3:10 = Psalms 14:1-3= Psalms 53:1-3; Ecclesiastes 7:20). Paul does the same here: [G-d] will render to each one according to his deeds. (Romans 2:6 = Psalms 62:12; Proverbs 24:12) with Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; Blessed is the man whom YHWH shall not impute sin. (Romans 4:7-8 = Psalms 32:1-2)

Paul resolves the apparent conflict by citing Genesis 15:6 (in Romans 4:3, 22): Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. Thus Paul resolves the apparent conflict by showing that under certain circumstances, belief/faith/trust (same word in Hebrew) can act as a substitute for righteousness/being just (same word in Hebrew).

Understanding Galatians 5:2

Now let us apply this rule to the apparent contradiction between Gal.

(Rom. 3:1-2 KJV)

The key is in understanding Galations 5:2 in context. At first glance one might think after reading this verse that this one verse disproves the entire case made throughout this article. But the key is that we must take the verse in context. One basic rule of hermeneutics is to ask yourself “who is speaking?” and “who is being spoken to?” Now we know that Paul is the speaker, but who is the “you” in Gal. 5:2? Is it the Galatians in general? Is it all mankind? Is it the modern reader? The answer to all of these quertions is “no”. If we look up just a little bit in Paul’s letter here we will see that Gal. 5:2 is the summary of an argument that he initiates in Gal. 4:21 and which he illustrates in Gal. 4:22-31.

Gal. 4:21 tells us exactly who the “you” in 5:2 is. He writes:

Tell me, you that desire to be under the law,
do you not hear the law?
Gal. 4:21

Note that “you” is defined in 4:21 as “you that desire to be under the law” Thus Gal. 5:2 should be understood to mean:

Behold, I Paul say
to you, [that desire to be under the law]
that if you be circumcised,
Christ shall profit you nothing

Now the phrase “under the law” does not refer to the Torah itself but to a false teaching that was never true. This phrase may best be understood from its usage in Rom. 6:14, “For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under the law but under grace.” Paul, therefore, sees “under grace” and “under the law” as diametrically opposed, one cannot be both. The truth is that since we have always been under grace (see Gen. 6:8; Ex. 33:12, 17; Judges 6:17f; Jer. 31:2) we have never been “under the law”. This is because the Torah was created for man, man was not created for the Torah (see Mk. 2:27). “Under the law” then, is not an obsolete Old Testament system, but a false teaching, which was never true.

So Paul is telling these people who are ready to apostatize and seek salvation through the false “under the law” doctrine, that their circumcisions will profit them nothing. Following the context then the rest of Gal. 5 is addressed to the “you that desire to be under the law” of 4:21.

Now let us examine the midrash Paul gives in Gal. 4:22-31. Remember now, we know from Gal. 4:21 that Paul is going to be illustrating a contrast between the Torah and the “under the law” teaching. The parable may be illustrated in a chart as follows:

The Torah is freedom. False teachings such as the “under the law” teaching brings only bondage.

Galatians 5:2 (and this is echoed through the rest of Galatians) tells apostates that their circumcision will not profit them anything, but Romans 3:1-2 tells believers that circumcision profits “much every way”.

John MacArthur and the Messianic Jew- The Rest of the Story

John MacArthur and the Messianic Jew
The Rest of the Story
By
James Scott Trimm

As I have said, I have been in this movement for a long, long, time.  Not long after I became a believer in Messiah, in the 1980’s, I was reading a book by John F. MacArthur Jr. and came across this passage about his interaction with a Jewish believer in Messiah:

I can recall a brilliant young man, a Jew, who had been a professor of economics at UCLA. After five years of teaching, he had dropped out and became a surfer.  He wondered into a Charismatic bookstore, and somebody told him about Jesus Christ.  He became a Christian and somehow came to our church.  I met with him at 6:00 AM every Tuesday morning for eight months to disciple him.  I gave him books to read and did my best to reach out and show him love.  It was a very crucial time for him because his family had bitterly disowned him as Jewish families often do when one of their members opts out of the Jewish faith.

One day he came to me and said, “John, I really love you, but I just want you to know that I am now going to another church—a Charismatic one.”  I asked him why, and he explained that it had nothing to do with doctrine.  It was just that “they really love me over there, and I like the feeling.”

Apparently working with me on a one-to-one basis was not enough.  He needed the fellowship of the group, and he had not found the kind he wanted in our church.

(The Charismatics- A Doctrinal Perspective; 1978 by John F. MacArthur, Jr. pages 201-202)

Upon reading this, I immediately recalled the “About the Author” material from the back cover of David Stern’s Messianic Jewish Manifesto:

DAVID H. STERN was born in Los Angeles in 1935, the great-grandson of one of the city’s first twenty Jews.  He earned a Ph.D. in economics at Princeton University and was a professor at UCLA, mountain-climber, co-author of a book on surfing, and owner of health-food stores.  In 1972 he came to faith in Yeshua. …

Yes, the Jewish believer who studied every morning for eight months with John MacArthur, before finding his path elsewhere, was none other than Messianic Jewish theologian David Stern.

Stern went on to become not only the author of Messianic Jewish Manifesto, but was translator of the Jewish New Testament and Complete Jewish Bible and author of the Jewish New Testament Commentary

I called David Stern in the early 90’s and asked him about the reference in MacArthur’s book, and he said “Ahhh… you found the hidden reference.”

So now you know, the rest of the story.

The Book of Enoch Prophesied Abortion in Last Days

The Book of Enoch Prophesied Abortion in Last Days
By
James Scott Trimm

Enoch was a prophet who lived in the days before the flood (Gen. 5:22-24; Heb. 11:5; Jude 1:14-15).  His book is quoted in the book of Jude (Jude 1:14-15 is quoting 1Enoch 1:9).  Enoch speaks of the last days saying:

And in those days the women shall become pregnant
and abort their babies
And cast them out from their midst
Yea, they shall abandon their children (that are still) sucklings,
and not return to them,
And shall have no pity on their beloved ones.
(1Enoch 99:5)

The original Hebrew of the Book of Enoch has not survived, and this passage has survived only in the Ancient Ethiopic version.  In the Ethiopic the word for “abort” here is MASIT a verb meaning “to pluck or tear out”; “to  violently remove”; “to carry off” or “to rob”.  Clearly this passage speaks of women aborting their babies in the last days.

The Fallen Angels Taught Abortion

Yeshua tells us that the last days would be like the days of Noach (Matt. 24:37-38).   In these days before the flood the Torah tells us:

1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
2 That the sons of Elohim saw the daughters of men, that they were fair. And they took them wives, whomsoever they chose.
3 And YHWH said: My Spirit shall not abide in man forever. For that he also is flesh; therefore shall his days be a hundred and twenty years.
4 The N’filim were on the earth in those days and also after that, when the sons of Elohim came in unto the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. The same were the mighty men that were of old–the men of renown.
5 And YHWH saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil; continually.
(Gen. 6:1-5 HRV)

The Book of Enoch tells us that these fallen angels taught men many things, and says that they “…showed the children of men … the smitings of the embryo in the womb, that it may pass away,…” (1Enoch 69:12)

Abortion is Murder

Abortion is murder.  Murder is simply the taking of an innocent human life. This is to be differentiated from “killing” when there is a righteous purpose for it. For example, the Bible sets up special cities to which a person may flee who has killed a person “by accident.” The person may stay and be protected in one of these special cities until the family of the deceased has stopped looking for the person for the purpose of revenge.

Also, YHWH Himself commands capital punishment, the death penalty, for the breaking of certain commands.”.   Self defense is clearly a valid reason for “killing” since the life being terminated is not innocent life.  However, the taking of innocent life is considered a “sin” and “wickedness.”

In the Torah we are commanded “You shall not kill”.  The literal Hebrew of Ex. 20:13 means, as we read in the HRV “Do not murder”.

Moreover we read in Deut. 23:7

“Keep you far from a false matter,
and the innocent and righteous slay you not:
for I will not justify the wicked.”

Life Begins at Conception

A human being’s person hood begins not at the time that he or she has completed development in the womb and is transferred out of the mother into the world. It is clear from Scripture that there is a seamless continuity in the life of a person from the moment of conception.

YHWH knows each person from the beginning.  As we read in Jeremiah:

4 And the word of YHWH came unto me, saying:
5 Before I formed you in the belly, I knew you, and before you came forth out of the
womb I sanctified you. I have appointed you a prophet unto the nations.
(Jer. 1:4-5 HRV)

Each person has a YHWH-given purpose from conception, as the Psalmist writes:

13 For You have made my reins; You have knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I will give thanks unto You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: wonderful are Your works, and that, my soul knows right well.
15 My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, and curiously
wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16 Your eyes did see my unformed substance, and in Your book they were all written;
even the days that were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.
(Ps. 139:13-16 HRV)

The Spirit of Elohim is with a person in his/her mother’s womb.  As we read in Luke:

11 And an angel of YHWH, who stood at the right side of the altar of incense, appeared to Z’kharyah.
12 And he was agitated: and trembled when he saw the angel, and fear fell upon him.
13 And the angel said to him, Do not fear, Z’kharyah, because Eloah has heard the sound of your prayer. And your wife, Elisheva, will bear to you a son, and you will call his name Yochanan,
14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice in his birth.
15 For he will be great before YHWH, and will not drink wine or strong drink. And he
will be filled with the Ruach HaKodesh, while he is in the womb of his mother.
16 And he will turn many of the sons of Yisrael, to YHWH their Eloah.
17 And he will go before Him, in the spirit, and in the might of Eliyahu, the prophet: that he might turn the heart of the fathers unto the children, (Mal. 3:23-24 (4:5-6)) and those who are disobedient, to the knowledge of the just. And he will prepare for YHWH a wholehearted people.
(Luke 1:11-17 HRV)

Any action or lack of action which intentionally causes the death of an unborn child, from the moment of conception is an act of murder.

Who Was Nicodemus? The Rest of the Story

Who Was Nicodemus?
The Rest of the Story
By
James Scott Trimm

“Nicodemus” (Jn. 7:45-52; 19:39) was almost certainly Nakdimon ben Gorion one of the three leading councilors in Jerusalem at the time of Yeshua.  According to the Talmud Nakdimon was wealthy enough to feed the entire city of Jerusalem for ten years (b.Gittin 56a).

One rather lengthy Talmud story tells us that once, during a drought, Nakdimon made a deal with a Roman General so as to procure twelve wells of water for the Jewish  people.  According to the story, Nakdimon promised the General to repay him either twelve wells or twelve talents of silver (a tidy sum) before the expiration of one year.  On the last day of the year it still had not rained, so Nakdimon went to the Temple to pray.  His prayer was answered and it began to rain and refill the wells.  The Roman General, however, demanded the silver, saying that the cloud-cover had caused the day, and thus the year, to expire prematurely.  Nakdimon returned to the Temple and prayed again, this time the clouds removed and the sun shined out, thus the General was satisfied. (b.Ta’anit 19b-20a)

The Talmud also tells us that “Nakdimon” was only his nick-name and that his real name was Buni (b.Ta’anit 20a).  The Talmud also relates that a certain Buni was a student of Yeshua and was himself martyred sometime after Yeshua’s death (b.San. 43a).

The Talmud suggests that the nickname Nakdimon was taken from NAKAD meaning “to shine” “because the sun shined out for him” (b.Ta’anit 20a).  A more likely source is NAKI DAM “innocent of the blood” based upon his actions recorded in Jn. 7:45-52; 19:39.  The Greek equivalent name Nicodemus has a meaning all of its own NIKOS DEMOS “victorious people”.  There would be no reason for Buni to have this Greek name as a nickname, but the sound-alike Greek name may have been used by the Roman occupiers in there dealings with this very wealthy man, as the Talmud does record that he had dealings with the Roman General stationed at Jerusalem (b.Ta’anit 19b-20a). So now you know the rest of the story!

We need your help to continue the ongoing work on the Scripture Research Project. (see more here) as well as our continued online articles and video teachings.

As I have said to you many times, I look on this work as a co-operative one with me, and all of you combining our resources together in order to get the job done of helping to teach this great truth to all in the world who will listen. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for your continued support, you are the ones who make it all possible by your contributions and your prayers for our work. I truly appreciate your help in every way.

If you can make a one time donation of $500 or $1,000 dollars to support this work.

Yeshua’s Struggle at Gey Sh’manim and the Midrash

Yeshua prays in the garden Matthew 26:39-40

Yeshua’s Struggle at Gey Sh’manim and the Midrash
By
James Scott Trimm

In the Gospel of Matthew we read of the agonizing of the Messiah at Gey Sh’manim:

36 Then comes Yeshua with them to a village whose name was Gey Sh’manim, and said to His talmidim: Sit you here, while I go yonder and pray.
37 And He took with Him Kefa, and the two sons of Zavdai, and began to be grieved and downcast.
38 And then said He to them: My nefesh is grieved to death. Await you Me here, and watch with Me.
39 And He passed on a little, and fell on His face, and prayed, saying: O Father, if it is possible that this cup pass away from Me, let it be done. But let it not be done as I will, but as You will.
40 And He came to His talmidim, and found them sleeping, and said to Kefa: Could you not watch with Me a single hour?
41 Awake and pray, that you enter not [into temptation.] The spirit indeed is watchful, but the flesh is frail.
42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying: O Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me, but I must drink it: be it as You will.
43 And He came again, and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
44 And He went away again, and prayed the third time, and said the same prayer as He had said already.
(Matthew 26:36-44 HRV)

This event in which Messiah is agonizing with his burden in prayer with the Father is very similar to a conversation which takes place between Elohim and the Messiah in the Midrash:

Elohim says: Their sins will be upon you like a yoke of iron. They will choke your spirit. Because of their sins, your tongue will cleave to the roof of your mouth.  Do you accept this? If not, I will remove the decree from you.

The Messiah replies: “Master of the worlds, how long will this last?

Elohim replies: “Ephraim, my true Messiah, ever since the six days of creation you have taken this ordeal upon yourself. At this moment, your pain is my pain”

Messiah replies: “Master of the worlds, I accept this with gladness in my soul, and joy in my heart, so that not a single one of the House of Israel should perish. Not only for those alive, but also the dead. It is enough that the servant be like the Master.
(Midresh Pesqita Rabbah 36)

What does the Midrash mean when it says “ever since the six days of creation you have taken this ordeal upon yourself”?  This is a reference to a Baraita which appears twice in the Talmud:

What is the meaning of “Eye has not seen” (Is. 64:3)
Rabbi Joshua ben Levi said:
This is the wine that has been kept
in its grapes from the six days in the beginning.
(b.Berakot 34b; b.Sanhedrin 99a)

And also in Midrash Rabbah to Num. 13:2 (500) which says:

Because he bared his soul unto death (Is. 53:12)
and bruised themselves with the Torah which is sweeter than honey,
the Holy One, blessed be He, will hereafter give them to drink
of the wine kept in its grapes since the six days in the beginning….
(Midrash Rabbah to Numbers 13:2 (500))

This brings us back to Matthew where Yeshua has said “if it is possible that this cup pass away from Me” referring to the wine kept in its grapes since the six days of creation which is tied by the Midrash to the death of the Messiah as prophesied in Isaiah 53.  Thus the midrash sheds a beautiful struggle of Messiah before his death.

Who is the Synagogue of Satan?

Who is the Synagogue of Satan?
By
James Scott Trimm

What is the “Synagogue of Satan” mentioned in Revelation 2:9 and 3:9. Both passage identify this group as “those who say they are Jews but lie”.

An interpretation of the above texts have surfaced which interprets these texts to refer to those Jews who do not accept Yeshua as the Messiah. But an honest look at the Scriptures will show that it is not possible to identify the “Synagogue of Satan” in this way.

To begin with it is important to recognize that the same “Yochanan” (“John”) wrote both Revelation and the Gospel of Yochanan. Not only is this the traditional understanding, but there are a number of common elements that point to the common authorship of these two books. Both books identify the Messiah as the “lamb” (Jn. 1:29; Rev. 5:6, 8, 12; 14:1) and as the incarnate “word” (Jn. 1:1-3, 14; Rev. 19:13) and both refer to the “living waters” (Jn. 4:10; 7:38; Rev. 22:1).  Although it is true that the Gospel of John uses different Greek words and phrases for “lamb” and “living waters” than Revelation, the words are the same in the Aramaic, pointing to the Aramaic origins of these books.

Now we must look at how Yochanan uses the word “Jew” in his own writings. Yochanan himself frequently invokes the term “Jews” to refer to Jewish people who rejected Yeshua as the Messiah. For example:

“therefore did the Jews persecute Yeshua” (Jn. 5:16)
“the Jews sought more to kill him” (Jn. 5:18)
“the Jews then murmured at him” (Jn. 6:41)
“the Jews sought to kill him” (Jn. 7:1)
etc. etc. etc.

CLEARLY Yochanan has absolutely no objection whatsoever to using the term “Jews” to refer either to Jews who accepted Messiah or those that rejected him. Therefore the statement in Rev. 2:9 and 3:9 cannot be criticizing this usage of the word “Jews”. Otherwise Yochanan would here be criticizing his own inspired writing in the Gospel of John in which he does just that himself frequently!

So what does Yochanan refer to here? I believe he refers to the newly hatched apostate teaching of “replacement theology”.
