The universe is rational not chaotic. The rational nature of the universe reveals “natural law” as the intent of the Creator.
Becoming a clear and unbiased thinker allows one to harmonize one’s own thoughts with the divine reason (Logos) of the universe (the mind of the Creator expressed in the creation). There is only one truth, there are never two or more sets of contradictory facts. Therefore if our thinking is truly rational, it is in harmony with the Creator and His universe. A man should thus conform his desires and his will to the reality of the universe itself. A man should be content with what the universe offers him, and content with reality itself as it unfolds. It is therefore irrational not to be content with one’s situation in the universe. Emotions can cloud rational thinking and thus destructive emotions can put one out of harmony with the LOGOS.
The fact that the universe is orderly and not chaotic implies providence because it suggests that reality is intended to unfold in a certain manner. Man has freewill to either conform to this providence or struggle against it, but happiness can only result from conforming to this providence, and that is the natural desire of the rational mind.
Since the universe is intended to unfold in a certain manner, there are things we can control and things we cannot control. We cannot control the universe (though we may influence it) but we can control our thinking. Therefore we should not base our happiness on things we cannot control (the universe), but on things we can control, our own thinking.
Since our own thinking is the only thing in our control, the things we should value and that our happiness should be based on, should be rational judgment, self-control, justice and courage. These are also the very things that help us control destructive emotions and keep our own thinking in conformity with the LOGOS.
