Agree with you as to who is a 'Nazerene'. I am taken aback that there is another who shares my views. At the 'NSC forum, I have often harped that a "Nasrani' is one who is so in his heart and not in his DNA.
Give me some time to reply to your letter. But I am afraid you may not be much interested in what I have to say, but for me our 'Nasrani' history is very interesting.
I have heard about Robert Eisenman and perhaps quickly read some of his writings.
There is another scholar/researcher, Dr. Nathan Katz who has actually done research in Kerala about the Jews of Cochin, which includes the 'Black Jews of Malabar' with whom we Nasranis are possibly related.
To my limited knowledge DNA tests were done upon a minimum of 25 of us and it appears that the results are pointing towards a 'Semetic heritage'. Some of us are Cohen or Levite and I happen to be a J2 hapalog guy.
While many ethnic groups claim that they are of Hebrew/Jewish heritage, our community had since about the last 200 or so years have generally claimed 'high Brahmin heritage'.
Hindu Brahmin heritage did not make sense to some of us and we went to examine the truth. Some of us had Jewish/Hebrew heritage in our families but some others were clearly told that we are descendents of high born Hindus called 'Namboodhiri Brahmins, who are the highest of the highest caste in India. My father and father in law did tell me that they are of Namboodhiri heritage.
To be of Hebrew/Jewish heritage is a step down for our comminity as we had heard the terrible persecution of the Jews and their utter and complete helplessness in the face of their foes.
Around 1599, the Portugeese persecuted us for being 'Juduaic Sabbath keepers' and the mightly arm of the 'Inquisiton' fell heavlily upon us and then the British came along wanting to waterdown our ancient heritage to serve their political and colonial ambitions.
The Nasranis were never interested in conversions of other people but the British wanted to use us to convert the rest of India into Chrisitianity. Anyways, there has been a loss of identity amongst us but fortunately, we recovered and now some of us are going in search of our original heritage.
There is little historical evidences to support what we claim but huge traditions and logical things to support what our Hebrew or Jewish heritage. Now DNAs have come to the rescue and some past wrong assumptions are no more holding water.
You will get confused and perhaps even 'repulsive' when you read our heated debates but sometime later when you are more in the know, you must read our debates. They can be read in the forum 'NSC or Nasrani Syrian Christians'.
I rarely use the word 'Christian' but prefer the word 'Nasrani' and I am becomming more and more 'orthodox' as the days go by.
Later, I will write.
