To slaughter or not to slaughter? (Pesach)

Is there any justfication in torah for the slaughtering of the Pesach lamb outside Jerusalem in the diaspora? What is the common ruling on this issue?

In other words, which command takes precedence:

Exo_12:14 (ISR)  ‘And this day shall become to you a remembrance. And you shall observe it as a festival to YHWH THROUGHOUT YOUR GENERATIONS – observe it as a festival, an everlasting law.

must slaughter throughout our generations, BUT...

Deu 16:5 “You are not allowed to slaughter the Passover within any of your gates which YHWH your Elohim gives you,
Deu 16:6 but at the place where YHWH your Elohim chooses to make His Name dwell, there you slaughter the Passover in the evening, at the going down of the sun, at the appointed time you came out of Mitsrayim

Exodus says the 1st day is on the 14th.  Leviticus says the 1st day is on the 15th.  The 1st day is on both the 14th and 15th.  there are NOT two 1st days.

according to Exodus, the seventh day ends the evening of the 21st.  according to leviticus, it ends ON the 21st.  there are not two seventh days!

son, do not reckon the period by days and nights. if you will examine your hebrew bible look for these words in Exodus 12:18

בערב...  עד...  בערב  that is "evening to evening" is clear from G-d's words.

hope it helps.

you are wrong.  14 to 21st is seven days.

14: night (FIRST DAY)

15: day (FIRST DAY)

15: night (SECOND DAY)

16: day (SECOND DAY)

16: night (THIRD DAY)

17: day (THIRD DAY)

17: night (FOURTH DAY)

18: day (FOURTH DAY)

18: night (FIFTH DAY)

19: day (FIFTH DAY)

19: night (SIXTH DAY)

20: day (SIXTH DAY)

20: night (SEVENTH DAY)

21: day (SEVENTH DAY)

the bible day is reckoned from sunrise to sunrise in my belief.  evening to evening is never said to be the basis of the confines of the day.

Thank you Beryl for your post.  That is very enlightening.  Shalom!

it is true that "first" in the passage means the first of the season, which is the 14th. where the Jews speak or write of "passover" they mean 14th to 21st (that includes the feast of unleavened bread); and where we speak or write of "feast of unleavened bread" we mean it to start at 14th evening (the passover) up to the 21st evening, the whole season. this traditional way of reckoning the seasonal feasts was merely received from the ancient rather than a product of arbitrary decision made by men sitting in council. the exposition in the talmud concerning "first" to be 14th is obviously based upon what were received from this and that, without further doing exegesis from written law. however, for the benefit of this age, from the standpoint of this generation and for the sake of curiosity, there are two handy arguments to this:

  • 1. written torah clearly states the period and uses term "in the first" (Ex. 12:18) saying בראשן בארבעה עשר יום "in the first, in fourteenth day", ad yom haechad veesrim until the twenty first of he month. it is very clear from divine language that "the first" applies to 14th and the period goes until 21st of the month. very clear indeed.
  • 2. the LXX (Septuagent,) an earlier translation during the second temple period, expresses how the ancient tradition understood the first by plainly saying "Beginning the fourteenth day ... until twenty first of the month", the first is the beginning and it is 14th. (LXX Ex. 12:18)

hope this helps.

good luck.

You are almost right Onieu:  the 14th Evening until the 21st Evening is exactly 7- 24 hour periods.

Just like the Day of Atonement is from the Evening of the Ninth until the Evening of the 10th so too is the First Day of Unleavened Bread from the Evening of the 14th until the Evening of the 15th.

Also, from the 15th (First Day of Unleavened Bread) until the 21st (Seventh Day of Unleavened Bread) is exactly 7 days:

15th Night (FIRST NIGHT)

15th Day (FIRST DAY)

16th Night (SECOND NIGHT)

16th Day (SECOND DAY)

17th Night (THIRD NIGHT)

17th Day (THIRD DAY)

18th Night (FOURTH NIGHT)

18th Day (FOURTH DAY)

19th Night (FIFTH NIGHT)

19th Day (FIFTH DAY)

20th Night (SIXTH NIGHT)

20th Day (SIXTH DAY)

21st Night (SEVENTH NIGHT)

21st Day (SEVENTH DAY)

TRUE!  The First Day of Unleavened Bread is the 15th, but begins from the Evening (Ending) of the 14th.

This is just like the Day of Atonement that is on the 10th of Tishri, but begins from the Evening (Ending) of the 9th of Tishri.

you are wrong john.  Exodus says the seventh day of unleavened bread ends the beginning of the evening of the 21st.  not the evening of the 22

I never mentioned anything about "the evening of the 22."

by your count

"20th Night (SIXTH NIGHT)

20th Day (SIXTH DAY)

21st Night (SEVENTH NIGHT)

21st Day (SEVENTH DAY)"

Thus, you are claiming the seventh day ends the evening of t he 22nd

No, the 7th day is the 21st day and ends on the 21st evening:

Exodus 12:18  In the first month, on the 14th day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the 21st  day of the month at even.

The evening is at the end of day 21.

yes indeed son, reckoning of day is darkness-to-daylight. but here, as often, G-d is making particular instructions concerning an important memorial, and one important point He gives is to reckon the season of festival from the basis of one evening to another evening. from His very language you can draw a clear conclusion as i have hinted you above.

good luck and peace.
