In <strong>Zech. 8:23<\/strong> the word <strong>\u201cyou\u201d is plural<\/strong>. The nations say: <em>\u201cLet us go with <strong>you<\/strong> [plural], for we have heard that Elohim is with <strong>you<\/strong> [plural].\u201d<\/em><br>This cannot refer merely to a <strong>single<\/strong> Jew (not even the Messiah); it refers to <strong>the Jewish people<\/strong>, the <strong>House of Judah<\/strong>. The prophecy is Ephraim and the nations taking hold of <strong>Judah<\/strong> because <strong>Elohim is with Judah<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Taking Hold of the <em>Kanaf<\/em>: Torah in the Hand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cskirt\u201d is <strong>\u05e7\u05b8\u05e0\u05b8\u05e3 (kanaf)<\/strong>\u2014the corner\/edge of the garment. That\u2019s exactly where YHWH commanded <strong>tzitziyot<\/strong> (fringes) to be attached:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Numbers 15:37\u201341 (HRV)<\/strong><br>\u201cSpeak unto the children of Yisra\u2019el \u2026 that they make \u2026 fringes (<strong>tzitziyot<\/strong>) in the <strong>corners<\/strong> (<em>kanafot<\/em>) of their garments \u2026 and it shall be unto you for a fringe, that you may look upon it, and <strong>remember all the commandments of YHWH<\/strong>, and do them\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>To \u201ctake hold of the <em>kanaf<\/em> of a Jew\u201d is to seize hold of the <strong>Torah-sign<\/strong>\u2014the covenantal marker entrusted to Judah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ephraimites Taking Hold<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So what is Ephraim\u2019s prophetic hope? A separate last-days restoration <strong>apart from<\/strong> Judah\u2014or a return <strong>to be joined<\/strong> to Judah?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ezekiel 37: Ephraim <strong>Put With<\/strong> Judah<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ezekiel\u2019s \u201ctwo sticks\u201d is the clearest picture of reunion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI will <strong>take<\/strong> the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of <strong>Ephraim<\/strong>, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and <strong>put them with<\/strong> the stick of <strong>Judah<\/strong>, and make them <strong>one stick<\/strong> \u2026 and they shall be <strong>one in My hand<\/strong>.\u201d<br>\u2014 <em>Ezek. 37:19\u201320<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Note the <strong>direction and ordering<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>YHWH <strong>takes<\/strong> Ephraim\u2019s stick,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>puts it with<\/strong> Judah\u2019s stick,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and makes them <strong>one<\/strong> in His hand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not two equal halves meeting in the middle. <strong>Ephraim is brought over and put with Judah.<\/strong> The unity is real; the ordering is covenantally <strong>Judah-ward<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Transition to Romans 11: etz = stick \/ tree<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hebrew word <strong>\u05e2\u05b5\u05e5 (<em>etz<\/em>)<\/strong> means <strong>\u201cstick\u201d<\/strong> <em>or<\/em> <strong>\u201ctree.\u201d<\/strong><br>Ezekiel\u2019s <strong>two <em>etz<\/em><\/strong> (two <strong>sticks<\/strong>) therefore map naturally to Paul\u2019s <strong>two <em>etz<\/em><\/strong> (two <strong>trees<\/strong>) in <strong>Romans 11<\/strong>. The prophetic images are the same picture in two registers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ezekiel 37<\/strong>: two <strong>etz<\/strong> (sticks) \u2192 <strong>one<\/strong> in YHWH\u2019s hand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Romans 11<\/strong>: two <strong>etz<\/strong> (trees)\u2014<strong>cultivated<\/strong> and <strong>wild<\/strong>\u2014with the wild branches <strong>grafted into<\/strong> the cultivated tree.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hosea \u2192 Romans 9\u201311: Who Are \u201cJews\u201d and \u201cGentiles\u201d?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul sets up Romans 11 by quoting <strong>Hosea<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rom. 9:25\u201326<\/strong> cites <strong>Hos. 2:25(23); 2:1 (1:10)<\/strong>\u2014the <strong>children of Israel<\/strong> who were \u201cnot My people\u201d becoming \u201cMy people.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Hosea\u2019s context, <strong>\u201cchildren of Israel\u201d<\/strong> (Ephraim) are contrasted with <strong>\u201cchildren of Judah\u201d<\/strong> (Hos. 2:2 [1:11]).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If Paul is reading Hosea <strong>in context<\/strong>, then his contrast in <strong>Rom. 9:24<\/strong> (\u201cJews and Gentiles\u201d) primarily tracks <strong>Judah<\/strong> and <strong>Ephraim among the nations<\/strong>\u2014not paganism as a rival faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Romans 11: Two Trees, One Root<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With Hosea\u2019s categories in hand, Romans 11 snaps into focus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>cultivated olive tree<\/strong> = <strong>Judah<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>wild olive<\/strong> = <strong>Ephraim<\/strong>, scattered in the nations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Ephraim\u2019s wild branches are <strong>broken off<\/strong> their feral stock and <strong>grafted into<\/strong> Judah\u2019s cultivated tree, to be <strong>nourished by Judah\u2019s root<\/strong>\u2014and warned <strong>not to boast<\/strong> against the natural branches:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cDo not boast against the [natural] branches\u2026 you are not bearing the <strong>root<\/strong>, but <strong>the root bears you<\/strong>.\u201d<br>\u2014 <em>Rom. 11:18 (HRV)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This mirrors Ezekiel\u2019s <strong>movement<\/strong>: <strong>Ephraim is put with Judah<\/strong>; <strong>Ephraim is grafted into Judah<\/strong>. The <strong>etz<\/strong> (stick) of Ephraim is joined to Judah\u2019s <strong>etz<\/strong> (tree)\u2014same Hebrew word, same prophetic logic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cSalvation Is of the Jews\u201d: Yeshua and an Ephraimite<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>John 4<\/strong>, the Samaritan woman identifies with <em>\u201cour father Jacob\u201d<\/em> (Jn. 4:12)\u2014an Ephraimite claim Yeshua does not challenge. He does, however, correct her worship:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cYou worship what you do not know; <strong>we<\/strong> worship what we know, because <strong>salvation is of the Jews<\/strong>. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth\u2026\u201d<br>\u2014 <em>Jn. 4:22\u201323 (HRV)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Ephraim\u2019s path is <strong>not<\/strong> a rival mountain. It is <strong>taking hold of Judah<\/strong>, through whom salvation and the oracles were entrusted (cf. Rom. 3:2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Judah\u2019s Fullness: Life from the Dead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul presses the hope further:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIf their stumbling became riches for the world\u2026 how much more, therefore, <strong>their fullness<\/strong>?\u201d<br>\u2014 <em>Rom. 11:12 (HRV)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2026 were grafted into the good olive tree, how much more <strong>they<\/strong>, if they be grafted into <strong>their own<\/strong> olive tree?\u201d<br>\u2014 <em>Rom. 11:24 (HRV)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Judah\u2019s restoration is \u201c<strong>life from the dead<\/strong>\u201d (Rom. 11:15). Isaiah mapped both the blindness and its cure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cFor YHWH has poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and has closed your eyes\u2026\u201d \u2014 <em>Isa. 29:10 (HRV)<\/em><br>\u201cAnd <strong>in that day<\/strong> shall the deaf hear the <strong>words of a book<\/strong>, and the eyes of the blind shall see\u2026\u201d \u2014 <em>Isa. 29:18 (HRV)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>book<\/strong> opens, the <strong>root<\/strong> nourishes, the <strong>natural branches<\/strong> awaken\u2014on YHWH\u2019s timetable, by YHWH\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Read Zechariah 8:23 Straight\u2014With Ezekiel and Paul in View<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cTen men from <strong>all languages<\/strong> of the nations shall <strong>take hold<\/strong>\u2014they shall take hold of the <strong>kanaf<\/strong> of a <strong>Jew<\/strong>\u2014saying, \u2018Let us go <strong>with you [pl.]<\/strong>, for we have heard that Elohim is <strong>with you [pl.]<\/strong>.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201c<strong>Ten men<\/strong>\u201d \u2192 the <strong>Ten Tribes<\/strong> (Ephraim) in dispersion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cFrom <strong>all languages<\/strong>\u201d \u2192 Ephraim assimilated among the nations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cTake hold of the <strong>kanaf<\/strong>\u201d \u2192 seize the <strong>tzitzit<\/strong>, the Torah-sign Judah bears.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201c<strong>You [pl.]<\/strong>\u201d \u2192 <strong>Judah<\/strong>, the House of Judah\u2014not a solitary figure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Set alongside <strong>Ezekiel 37<\/strong> and <strong>Romans 11<\/strong>, the line reads plainly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cLet <strong>us<\/strong> [Ephraim] go <strong>with you<\/strong> [Judah], for <strong>we<\/strong> [Ephraim] have heard that <strong>YHWH is with you<\/strong> [Judah].\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Ephraim is <strong>not<\/strong> the root, trunk, or standard. Ephraim is <strong>taken<\/strong>, <strong>put with<\/strong>, and <strong>grafted into<\/strong> Judah\u2019s living covenantal tree, to be <strong>fed by the root<\/strong> and to walk in the Torah Judah bears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are You Boasting\u2014or Taking Hold?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The last-days picture is consistent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ephraim<\/strong> and the nations awaken to the reality that <strong>Elohim is with Judah<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They <strong>take hold<\/strong> of Judah\u2019s <em>kanaf<\/em>\u2014<strong>Torah<\/strong>\u2014and are <strong>grafted into<\/strong> Judah\u2019s cultivated tree.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They <strong>do not boast<\/strong> against the natural branches, and they <strong>do not<\/strong> demand that Judah take hold of them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So test yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Are you expecting Judah to be grafted into <strong>your<\/strong> system?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or are you humbling yourself to <strong>take hold of Judah<\/strong> and be <strong>fed by the root<\/strong> of the Jewish olive tree?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The sticks are being joined\u2014and the branches are being grafted\u2014exactly in the order the prophets gave.<\/strong> The faithful response is simple and hard: <strong>take hold<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Support NazareneSpace<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Friends, our community space makes this work possible\u2014<em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#f70707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">but our rent is due today and we must raise at least $200 to cover it.<\/mark><\/em> If the teachings and resources we share have blessed you, would you prayerfully consider supporting us?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can send a gift securely via PayPal to <strong><a>donations@wnae.org<\/a><\/strong> or give online here: <a href=\"http:\/\/nazarenespace.com\/blog\/donate\/\">nazarenespace.com\/blog\/donate<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every contribution, no matter the size, helps us keep this work going.
