One of the strangest and most beautiful threads that runs through both Scripture and science is the pattern of three<\/strong>. It\u2019s as though creation itself was pressed with a threefold seal, leaving an imprint of divine unity on everything from the cosmos to the human soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The [profession of] unity that every day is [a profession of] unity<\/em> is to be understood and to be perceived. We have said in many places that this prayer is a profession of Unity that is proclaimed:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dHear O Yisrael, YHWH\u201c first, [then] \u201cEloheynu\u201d [and] \u201cYHWH\u201d they are all One and thus He is called \u201cOne\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behold, these are three names, how can they be one? Is it because we call them one? (literally: And also concerning the proclamation that we call them one?). How these are one can only through the vision of the Holy Sprit be known. And these are through the vision of the closed eye (or the hidden eye) To make known that these three are one.<\/em>
And this is the mystery of the voice that is heard. The voice is one. And is three GAUNIN: fire and air and water. And all these are one in the mystery of the voice.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And also here \u201cYHWH, Eloheynu, YHWH\u201d these are One. Three GAUNIN that are One. And this is the voice of the act of a son of man in [proclaiming] the Unity.<\/em>
And to which he sees by the Unity of the \u201cAll\u201d from Eyn Sof (the Inifinite One) to the end of the \u201cAll\u201d. Because of the voice in which it is done, in these are three that are one.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And this is the [profession] of the daily profession of Unity that is revealed in the mystery of the Holy Spirit.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there are many GAUNIN that are a Unity, and all of them are true, what the one does, that the other does, and what that one does, the other does.<\/em>
(Zohar II:43a).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Here the Zohar marvels at the paradox of the Shema<\/em>: three divine names (YHWH, Eloheynu, YHWH<\/em>) that are nevertheless one. It explains this mystery through the Ruach HaKodesh<\/em> (Holy Spirit), comparing it to the kol<\/em> (\u201cvoice\u201d), which is one yet expressed in three modes<\/strong>\u2014fire, air, and water. The Hebrew\/Aramaic word gaunin<\/em> means “colors,” \u201caspects,\u201d \u201chues,\u201d or \u201ctones.\u201d The unity of the divine voice reverberates in a threefold resonance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hebrew language itself<\/strong> teaches us something very important. The common Hebrew word for \u201cnature\u201d is \u05d8\u05b6\u05d1\u05b7\u05e2 (teva\u02bf<\/em>)<\/strong>, from a root that means \u201cto stamp, to imprint, to sink in.\u201d Nature is not a self-standing force, but the imprint<\/strong> of the Creator stamped into creation, like a seal pressed into wax. The word is used in just this way in the Tanak:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened<\/strong> (\u05d8\u05d1\u05e2)? or who laid the corner stone thereof; (Job. 38:6 KJV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the mountains were settled<\/strong> (\u05d8\u05d1\u05e2), before the hills was I brought forth:(Proverbs 8:25 KJV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Jewish philosopher Philo of Alexandria<\/strong> used the same imagery. He said that God imprints creation by means of the Logos \u2014 like a seal stamping its form into matter. Creation, in other words, bears the mark of the divine pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pattern of Three in Physics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is not just poetry. Modern physics itself is stamped with this same threefold pattern:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
