Who Is a Jew? Contesting the Identity Crisis

In recent years I have noticed an identity crisis among many Torah-seeking believers. Some have developed a fear\u2014or even an aversion\u2014toward embracing a Jewish identity<\/strong>. Instead, they prefer terms like \u201cIsraelite,\u201d \u201cEphraimite,\u201d or \u201cHouse of Israel.\u201d Behind this hesitation lies a common claim: that the word Jew<\/em> (Yehudi) only applies to one tribe (Judah), or at most the three tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Levi. According to this reasoning, the Ten Tribes and even Gentile proselytes to Torah and Messiah should never be called \u201cJews.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This idea is not only historically mistaken, but also undermines the very restoration of Nazarene Judaism that YHWH is working in our day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I myself came out of Rabbinic Judaism. When I accepted Yeshua as the Jewish Messiah, I did not leave Judaism to embrace some foreign religion. I remained a Jew, because Yeshua is the Messiah of Judaism, and His original followers were a sect of Judaism known as the Nazarenes<\/em> (Netzarim). Our task is not to invent an Ephraimite alternative or some new hybrid faith, but to restore that ancient Jewish sect of Nazarene Judaism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Word \u201cJew\u201d and the Ten Tribes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Scriptures themselves use the term Jew<\/em> far more broadly than just one tribe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take the Book of Tobit. Tobit was a faithful man from the tribe of Naphtali, carried away in the Assyrian exile (Tobit 1:1\u20132). He continued to bring his tithes and offerings to the priests in Jerusalem, keeping the Torah faithfully (Tobit 1:3\u20138). Later in the story, his people\u2014exiles of the Northern Kingdom\u2014are explicitly called \u201cJews\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd they and all the Jews<\/strong> who were in Nineveh rejoiced with great joy\u2026\u201d
(Tobit 11:17 HRV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

So here we have members of the Ten Tribes, in exile, faithfully serving YHWH\u2014and they are called \u201cJews.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We see the same in the Book of Esther. After the deliverance of Purim, we are told:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd many from among the peoples of the land, became Jews<\/strong>: for the fear of the Jews had fallen upon them.\u201d
(Esther 8:17 HRV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Here Gentiles themselves \u201cbecame Jews\u201d by joining themselves to the Jewish people and their faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sha\u2019ul (Paul) echoes this reality. He calls his readers \u201cformerly Gentiles\u201d (Eph. 2:11; 1 Cor. 12:2), implying that they too had joined Israel\u2014and in the broad sense, had \u201cbecome Jews.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judah\u2019s Faith and the Rise of \u201cJudaism\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After the kingdom split, the Northern Kingdom (Ephraim\/Israel) rebelled. They rejected the Davidic king, the Aaronic priesthood, and the Temple, establishing their own counterfeit religion (1 Kings 12).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Judah, though imperfect, remained tethered to the true faith. Hosea says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEphraim has surrounded Me with lies,
and the house of Israel with deceit.
But Judah still walks with God\u2026\u201d
(Hosea 11:12)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Because Judah was the house that remained faithful, the true faith eventually came to be known as Judaism<\/strong>. Already by the time of the Maccabees, Jews were said to be those \u201cwho strove zealously on behalf of Judaism\u201d (2 Macc. 2:21). Philo, Josephus, and Paul all use the term freely in the first century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul\u2014though from the tribe of Benjamin\u2014calls himself a Jew<\/strong> (Acts 21:39; 22:3) and even insists in the present tense, \u201cI am a Pharisee\u201d (Acts 23:6). He refers to his own faith as \u201cJudaism\u201d (Gal. 1:13). Clearly, \u201cJew\u201d had already become the umbrella identity for all who practiced the faith centered in Judah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Messiah and the True Worshipers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Yeshua Himself confirmed this when He spoke with the Samaritan woman, an Ephraimite. She claimed Jacob as her father (John 4:12), yet Yeshua did not dispute her tribal lineage. Instead He told her plainly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou worship what you do not know;
we worship what we know,
because salvation is of the Jews<\/strong>.\u201d
(John 4:22\u201323)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

He did not say salvation was of Ephraim, nor of a \u201cnew religion,\u201d but of the Jews who worship in spirit and in truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prophetic Future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The prophets are equally clear: the hope of Ephraim is not to establish a rival identity, but to be reunited with Judah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
