\u201cBy what authority do you do these things? And who gave you this authority?\u201d<\/strong>
\u2014 Matthew 21:23<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

This question, posed to Yeshua by the chief priests and elders, lies at the heart of a vital issue in the restoration of authentic Nazarene Judaism: semikhah<\/strong> \u2014 ordination or authorization, traditionally by laying on of hands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Matthew 21:23\u201327<\/em>, Yeshua answers their challenge not with a direct assertion, but with a question of His own:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe baptism of Yochanan\u2014was it from heaven, or from men?\u201d (v.25)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

This is more than clever rhetoric. It exposes the very fault line dividing true divine authority from the self-serving politics of man-made institutions. If Yochanan\u2019s authority was \u201cfrom Heaven,\u201d then so too was the semikhah<\/strong> he conferred \u2014 including the authority he passed to Yeshua at his immersion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2721\ufe0f The Essene Line of Semikhah<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As shown in historical research, including insights from the Dead Sea Scrolls and early gospel traditions, Yochanan the Immerser was aligned with the Essenes<\/strong>, a Second Temple sect known for their strict halakhic rigor and opposition to the corruption of the priesthood. Yeshua\u2019s authority (semikhah<\/em>) was not derived from the Pharisees or Sadducees<\/strong>, but from a distinct halakhic lineage<\/strong> \u2014 traced through Yochanan to the Essene tradition. In John 1:6\u20138, 15, 26\u201327<\/em> and Matthew 3:1<\/em>, we see this line affirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pharisees, when pressed by Yeshua\u2019s question, would not answer \u2014 because to admit Yochanan\u2019s authority was \u201cof Heaven\u201d would validate Yeshua\u2019s authority too. But to deny it would discredit a prophet recognized and beloved by the people. This strategic silence reveals their awareness that true semikhah<\/strong> need not come from institutional Pharisaic channels to be valid \u2014but it can, and must ultimately, come from Heaven<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2721\ufe0f Semikhah and the Laying on of Hands<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The word semikhah<\/strong> (\u05e1\u05b0\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05db\u05b8\u05d4) literally means \u201claying on of hands.\u201d This is no symbolic gesture; it is a sacred act that appears throughout Scripture as a means of transferring authority, healing, or the Ruach haKodesh (Holy Spirit)<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
