For years, we\u2019ve been saying that the Gospels were originally written in Hebrew and later translated into Aramaic\u2014and only after that into Greek. Today, we want to show you two powerful examples that drive this point home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These examples don\u2019t just prove a theory\u2014they help us recover the original words of Yeshua and preserve the true meaning of His teachings. And they show why our work matters right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Example One: The Lost Sheep\u2014In the Mountains or the Wilderness?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s begin with a small detail from the parable of the lost sheep. In Matthew 18:12<\/strong>, the Greek reads:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201c…does he not leave the ninety and nine, and go into the mountains<\/strong> (\u03b5\u1f30\u03c2 \u03c4\u1f70 \u1f44\u03c1\u03b7<\/em>) to seek that which is gone astray?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

But in Luke 15:4<\/strong>, the same parable says something quite different:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c…does he not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness<\/strong> (\u1f10\u03bd \u03c4\u1fc7 \u1f10\u03c1\u03ae\u03bc\u1ff3<\/em>) and go after that which is lost?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

So which is it\u2014mountains<\/strong> or wilderness<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer lies in the Old Hebrew Matthew<\/strong>, preserved in the DuTillet and Munster manuscripts<\/strong>, which read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u05d1\u05de\u05d3\u05d1\u05e8<\/strong> \u2014 \u201cin the wilderness\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

This matches Luke 15:4 and likely reflects the original Hebrew text of Matthew. So where did the Greek Matthew get \u201cmountains\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trail leads through Aramaic<\/strong>. In Old Syriac Matthew 18:12<\/strong>, the Aramaic word is \u05d1\u05d8\u05d5\u05e8\u05d0<\/strong> (b\u2019tura<\/em>). In Jewish Western Aramaic\u2014the dialect likely used in the first-century Aramaic version Gospel\u2014\u05d8\u05d5\u05e8\u05d0<\/strong> could mean open country<\/strong>, desert<\/strong>, or wilderness<\/strong>. But in later Syriac Aramaic usage, \u05d8\u05d5\u05e8\u05d0<\/strong> means \u201cmountain.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Greek translator, unfamiliar with the Jewish Western Aramaic sense, misunderstood \u05d8\u05d5\u05e8\u05d0<\/strong> as mountains<\/strong> and rendered it \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2 \u03c4\u1f70 \u1f44\u03c1\u03b7<\/em>. Luke, however, preserved the sense accurately as \u1f10\u03bd \u03c4\u1fc7 \u1f10\u03c1\u03ae\u03bc\u1ff3<\/em>\u2014\u201cin the wilderness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the original Hebrew is preserved in the Old Hebrew Version of Matthew as preserved in the DuTillet and Munster texts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This small difference offers powerful evidence for the transmission sequence:
Hebrew \u2192 Aramaic \u2192 Greek<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Example Two: Matthew 11:13 \u2014 A Word That Changes Everything<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Another verse that confuses many readers is Matthew 11:13<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.\u201d
(KJV)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

This verse has been misused in multiple ways\u2014by antinomians who claim the Torah ended with John, by sects like the Campbellites who claim all prophecy was fulfilled before him, or by those who argue prophecy ceased entirely with his ministry. All of these views fall apart under scrutiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real solution again lies in the Old Hebrew Version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Garza-Trimm Hebrew manuscript<\/strong> of Matthew (another witness to the Old Hebrew Version) reads differently than the DuTillet and Munster<\/strong> texts. Instead of \u05e2\u05d3<\/strong> (\u2018ad<\/em>, \u201cuntil\u201d) John, it reads \u05e2\u05dc<\/strong> (\u2018al<\/em>, \u201cconcerning\u201d) John.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These two words are visually similar in Hebrew and could easily have been confused by later scribes. But the reading \u201cconcerning John\u201d<\/strong> fits the context far better. Just one verse earlier, Yeshua quotes Malachi 3:1<\/strong> and applies it to John. Earlier still, in Matthew 3:3, he references Isaiah 40:3<\/strong>, also about John.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, the Torah and Prophets did not end<\/em> with John\u2014they spoke of<\/em> John.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This simple correction removes the confusion and restores the clear meaning of Yeshua\u2019s words. Once again, Hebrew makes sense of a passage that seems obscure in Greek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
