Sons of the House of Eloah: The Aramaic Origin of Ephesians<\/strong>

Some have a hard time with the idea that the Pauline Epistles were written in Aramaic (and in the case of Hebrews, in Hebrew) but in Ephesians 2:19-20 Paul begins a flow of logic, which only makes sense in the Aramaic not in Greek<\/em><\/strong>.

19 Henceforth, you are neither strangers nor foreigners, but sons of the city, who are<\/em> sanctified, and sons of the house of Eloah.<\/em>
20 And you are built upon the foundation of the emissaries and of the prophets: and<\/em> Yeshua the Messiah has become the head of the corner of the building (Ps. 118:22-23).<\/em>

To begin with in verse 19 in the Greek, Paul identifies his audience as \u201cfellow-citizens (\u03c3\u03c5\u03bc\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03b9\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9) of the saints\u201d and \u201cof the household (\u03bf\u03b9\u03ba\u03b5\u03b9\u03bf\u03b9) of Eloah (Theos).\u201d

However in the Aramaic Peshitta verse 19 literally says \u201csons of the city\u201d (\u05d1\u05e0\u05d9 \u05de\u05d3\u05d9\u05e0\u05ea\u05d0) an Aramaic idiom for \u201ccitizen\u201d.  Verse 19 then in the Aramaic has \u201cand sons of the House of Eloah\u201d (\u05d5\u05d1\u05e0\u05d9 \u05d1\u05d9\u05ea\u05d4 \u05d3\u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d0) in idiomatic way of saying \u201cof the household of Eloah\u201d in Aramaic.  It should be noted that the phrase \u201cHouse of Eloah\u201d (\u05d1\u05d9\u05ea\u05d4 \u05d3\u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d0) is also an idiomatic term in Hebrew and Aramaic for the Temple.  Remember, none of these idiomatic expressions appear in the Greek which simply reads \u201cof the household (\u03bf\u03b9\u03ba\u03b5\u03b9\u03bf\u03b9) of Eloah (Theos).\u201d

Then in verse 20 Paul refers to the \u201chousehold of Eloah\u201d as \u201chaving been built (\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2) on the foundation of the emissaries and prophets, being the cornerstone (\u03b1\u03ba\u03c1\u03bf\u03b3\u03c9\u03bd\u03b9\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd) himself, Messiah Yeshua\u201d.  Verse 21 then says \u201cIn whom all the building (\u03bf\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03b4\u03bf\u03bc\u03b7) being fitted together grows into a Holy Temple in YHWH.\u201d  And finally verse 22 has \u201cIn whom also you are-being-built-together (\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03ba\u03bf\u03b4\u03bf\u03bc\u03b5\u03b9\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5) into a habitation for God by the Spirit\u201d.

However in the Aramaic \u201chaving been built\u201d (v. 20) is \u05d5\u05d0\u05ea\u05d1\u05e0\u05d9\u05ea\u05d5\u05df \u201ccornerstone\u201d is \u05e8\u05d9\u05e9 \u05e7\u05e8\u05e0\u05d0 \u05d3\u05d1\u05e0\u05d9\u05e0\u05d0  literally \u201cthe head corner of the building\u201d.  In verse 21 \u201cthe building\u201d is \u05d1\u05e0\u05d9\u05e0\u05d0  and \u201cyou are being built\u201d is \u05de\u05ea\u05d1\u05e0\u05d9\u05df .  The words for building here are all benyana (\u05d1\u05e0\u05d9\u05e0\u05d0) and the verb root for \u201cto build\u201d in each case is b\u2019na (\u05d1\u05e0\u05d0) which is the verb root for the word \u201cstone\u201d \u2018abana (\u05d0\u05d1\u05e0\u05d0).

It is important to know that there is a common wordplay in Hebrew between \u201cson(s)\u201d ben (sing.) b\u2019nai (plural) and \u201cstones\u201d.  A classic example is found in Matthew 3:9

And think not to say within yourselves,<\/em>
We have Abraham to our father:<\/em>
for I say unto you, that Elohim is able of these stones<\/strong><\/em>
to raise up sons<\/strong> unto Abraham.<\/em>
(Matt. 3:9)<\/em>

By using these related words Paul has implied a wordplay between believers as \u201csons of the House of Elohim\u201d (2:19) and \u201cstones of the Temple\u201d (implied in 2:20-22).  The wordplay is very clear in the Aramaic and is clearly original to the document.  The use of the Aramaic idioms \u201csons of the house of\u201d and \u201cHouse of Eloah\u201d becomes the transition point at which Paul\u2019s argument turns to the subject of an allegorical Temple built out of believers in 2:20-22).  The whole point to Paul\u2019s argument is embedded in an Aramaic word play that is absent in the Greek, that is itself rooted in an Aramaic idiom which is also absent from the Greek.  This is very clear evidence that Paul wrote in Hebrew or Aramaic and his work was then translated into Greek.<\/p>\n\n\n
