Was the Torah Blotted out and Nailed to the Cross? (Col. 2:14)<\/strong>

Often when I share with Christians that the Torah is everlasting, for all generations, they respond by saying, \u201cBut the law was blotted out .\u201d By this they allude to Colosians 2:14 which reads in the the KJV:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances<\/em>
that was against us,<\/em>
which was contrary to us,<\/em>
and took it out of the way,<\/em>
nailing it to his cross.<\/em>
(Col. 2:14 KJV<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This very poor translation in the King James Version has given rise to a false theology that the Torah was blotted out and nailed to the cross.  The KJV has a very poor translation here.  The Greek phrase translated \u201chandwriting of ordinances\u201d is  \u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03cc\u03b3\u03c1\u03b1\u03c6\u03bf\u03bd  \u03c4\u03bf\u1fd6\u03c2  \u03b4\u03cc\u03b3\u03bc\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd the Greek word \u03c7\u03b5\u03b9\u03c1\u03cc\u03b3\u03c1\u03b1\u03c6\u03bf\u03bd is better translated \u201ccertificate of debt\u201d rather than \u201chandwriting\u201d and \u03b4\u03cc\u03b3\u03bc\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd is better translated \u201cdecrees\u201d rather than \u201cordinances\u201d as the KJV renders it.  The Greek is better translated as it appears in the New American Standard translation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

having cancelled out the certificate of debt<\/em>
consisting of decrees against us<\/em>
and which was hostile to us;<\/em>
and he has taken it out of the way,<\/em>
having nailed it to the cross.<\/em>
(Col. 2:14 NAS)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reading of the KJV \u201cthe handwriting of ordinances that was against us\u201d is interpreted by many to refer to the Torah, however the Greek actualy means \u201cthe certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us\u201d which is actually referring not to the Torah, but to the record of our sins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original Aramaic is clearer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has blotted out, by His commandments,<\/em>
the handwriting of our debts<\/em>
which were against us,<\/em>
and He took from the midst<\/em>
and fastened it on His gallows.<\/em>
(Col. 2:14 HRV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the original Aramaic Paul is actually saying that it is by the Torah that \u201cthe handwriting of our debts which were against us\u201d were blotted out.  In both the Aramaic and the Greek it is not the Torah which was blotted out in Col. 2:14, but the record of our sins.<\/p>\n\n\n
