{"id":3281,"date":"2021-08-17T13:43:59","date_gmt":"2021-08-17T18:43:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nazarenespace.com\/blog\/?p=3281"},"modified":"2024-11-07T09:15:14","modified_gmt":"2024-11-07T15:15:14","slug":"why-titus-was-not-compelled-to-be-circumcised-gal-23","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/nazarenespace.com\/blog\/2021\/08\/17\/why-titus-was-not-compelled-to-be-circumcised-gal-23\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Titus was not Compelled to be Circumcised (Gal. 2:3)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/nazarenespace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Yeshiva-300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-979\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nazarenespace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Yeshiva-300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/nazarenespace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Yeshiva-300-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Why Titus was not Compelled to be Circumcised (Gal. 2:3)<br>By<br>James Scott Trimm<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many who teach that circumcision is not for today will cite Galatians 2:3 saying that Titus was not compelled to be circumcised, but what does that really mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<em>Even Titus that was with me, who was an Aramean,<br>was not <strong>compelled<\/strong> to be circumcised.<br>(Gal. 2:3 HRV)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201ccompelled\u201d = The Aramaic word here is \u05d0\u05ea\u05d0\u05e0\u05dd IT\u2019ENAS literally \u201cto be forced\u201d from the root \u05d0\u05e0\u05dd meaning \u201cto take by force\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The text is telling us not that Titus was not circumcised, but that he had done so <strong><em>voluntarily<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>not<\/em><\/strong> been circumcised <strong><em>by force<\/em><\/strong> as the Maccabeans had done:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Then Mattathias and his friends went round about, and pulled down the altars:<br>And what children soever they found within the coast of Israel uncircumcised, those <strong>they circumcised<\/strong> <strong><span style=\"color:#f7010d\" class=\"has-inline-color\">by force<\/span><\/strong>.<br>(1Macc. 2:45-46<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact a comparison with Acts 15-16 will show that at this same time <strong><em>Timothy was also circumcised voluntarily<\/em><\/strong> and not by force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul advocated the Pharisaic teaching of Antigones of Soko (who lived in the Maccabean era):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Antigones of Soko received [Torah] from Simeon the Righteous.<br>He used to say, \u201cBe not like servants who serve their master<br>for the sake of wages, but be like servants who serve their<br>master with no thought of a wage \u2013 and let the fear<br>of Heaven be upon you.\u201d<br>(m.Avot 1:3)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul did not want people to be circumcised by compulsion, either by the offer of a reward or the threat of a punishment, but from their own heart, out of the fear (respect) of YHWH, not trying to earn anything. This was at odds with hie Essene opponent who was compelling circumcisions as a method of earning salvation.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"76\" height=\"80\" src=\"http:\/\/nazarenespace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Siren2-2.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-876\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#f80223\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Donations in recent weeks have been low, bills are coming due, and we do not have the funds to cover them!
